You Want To Do What “To.” Yourself?

You Want To Do What “To.” Yourself?

I am constantly amazed at stories of what some people are willing to try in the name of "beauty". If you are thinking of testing out any of the these, you better think twice:

Using Waist Trainers

This trend involves wearing a corset-like bodice for several hours of the day for extended periods of time to achieve an hourglass shape. The issue with this perceived figure-slimming fix is the potential health damages according to Grace Anglin, a nurse practitioner at Capizzi MD in Charlotte, North Carolina. “Consider how tight this garment feels on your skin when you put it on; then imagine how it makes your internal organs feel,” she says. “Squeezing your organs together and decreasing the available internal space they have is not a good thing.”

Ordering “Botox” Online & Injecting 'It." In Your Face

Believe it or not, this happens every day. There are hundreds of websites that sell an injectable they claim is Botox (or something allegedly similar). They’ll even ship it right to your home. The cheaper cost may be tempting but leave it to a licensed, trained professional. “Not only is there no way for you to know what you’re actually injecting, but those without medical backgrounds or experience with neurotoxins also should not be injecting any products for this purpose,” warns Anglin.

Applying Hemorrhoid Cream Under Puffy Eyes

No one wants under-eye bags and dark circles, but the best remedies involve sleep, hydration, and cooling products, not Preparation H. “There is a reason hemorrhoid creams are used for a specific area on the body—the ingredients are not meant "to." be near sensitive areas like your eyes,” says John Diaz, MD, a plastic surgeon based in Beverly Hills. “Instead use chilled cucumber slices or cold packs under your eyes "to." reduce swelling.” I have heard models promoting the use of hemorrhoid creams - beware!

Using Colored Pencils & Crayons As Makeup

Pencils and crayons that are intended for arts and crafts projects are definitely not meant "to." be used as makeup substitutions. “Although most of these coloring tools are non-toxic, it’s possible that they contain higher levels of lead than what is generally recommended as safe,” says Dr. Palm. “Additionally, some of the colours, dyes, and stabilizers used in these creative tools are dangerous on the face, and, as a result, patients may accidentally ingest dangerous materials or develop contact allergies and skin problems or eye infections from use.”

Skin Bleaching

This trend of using actual bleach on the skin to relieve redness, lighten skin tone, and clear up acne is downright dangerous, according to experts. “There are often dangerous chemicals in the mix, most notably hydroquinone, which is legal in the United States but has been banned in Europe and Japan because of fears that it causes cancer. Using skin-care products that contain natural alternatives to hydroquinone, such as licorice or bearberry extract are better choices. They even out skin tone and fade dark spots.

Fixing Self-tanning Streaks With Magic Eraser

Some beauty bloggers are swearing by the Magic Eraser, a cleaning sponge meant to remove stains around your house. Not a smart idea, according to experts. “The sponges are not only abrasive, but they contain chemicals that should not be placed on the skin, let alone scrubbed into it,” says Melanie D. Palm, MD, San Diego-based dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon. “It can cause rashes, itching, skin breakdown, and in rare circumstances, a systemic and life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis.” For a streak-free faux tan, she suggests exfoliating before applying it and washing the palms and soles of your feet thoroughly immediately after application.

Personally, I use little makeup: lipstick and mascara for an all-over natural look. My attitude has been, "Accept me for who I am."

What crazy things have you tried or have heard about?

I've heard about hemorrhoid cream for years, but some of those others seem downright scary! 😮

Many women wear way too much stuff, but the stuff here is just crazy

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Scary, indeed.

In addition to the common sense *therapies* you mention (sleep and hydration), I would add exercise, nutrition and mindfulness (this would include mediation). Moreover, there are plenty of healthy and effective supplements available if you are in pursuit of marginal gains.

Of course, we are all about quick-fixes and instant gratification, which the snake oils you highlighted absolutely promise.

Your closing admonition to "Accept me for who I am" is 100% effective with authentic people. We are not all *perfect matches* (far from it, LO but I cannot recall ever having the summary judgment, "Wow, I could really get closer to that woman if she only used skin bleach or a magic eraser."

Personally, I don't understand how injecting Botulism toxins into the body even became medically approved.

The Waist Trainer is today's spandex n hard rubber version of the old fashioned lace up corsets with stays and bones. My god daughter was wearing one at Christmas and we had a serious talk from my medical viewpoint. I think she did what she wanted anyway - figures ( oops a pun slipped out )
The rest of them are horror stories in the medical journals from way back.
Lipstick or gloss and mascara is all I have ever used- I cant stand the cosmetic hype

Yes - models and beauty pageant contestants have been talking about the hemorrhoid treatment for puffy eyes for years. And I agree - the others are scary and dangerous!

I don't understand it either. As I mentioned on another comment, have you ever seen the tv show "Botched"? The amount of work they do to "correct" disastrous things people have had done to themselves is scary to say the least.

And for some reason, people think that "celebrity" endorsements give these ideas more credibility. Or have you ever taken a close look at those "before" and "after" pictures? Not even the same person!

If only we could all simply accept natural beauty. What people will do to themselves in the name of beauty and fashion continues to amaze me sexyldy.

Everyone is unique and those differences should be celebrated instead striving to look like clones of one another. Diversity should be welcomed, not discouraged

Just got the shivers reading this. I want to say that is surprises me people would do these things, tho, it doesn't. Common sense goes a long way! I found "crayola makeup" one of the most stupidest things I've ever heard ... LOL ... Happy Sunday!

I've never understood the extremes that people go to in the name of 'beauty'. I've a niece who is a beautiful young girl, but she's determined to have her lips plumped and eyebrows tattooed as soon as she's old enough that her mum can't prevent her. I suppose she'll have it done professionally, but it worries me that if she's prepared to do this at the age of 18yo, what will she do to herself as she gets older??

I much prefer to see nature take its own course. it is almost always more appealing than something artificially enhanced.

Pull ma finger.........

Thank you for sharing your experience. It scares me that distorted perceptions of what "beauty" is starts at such young ages with females and males. Definitely agree that an all-natural look is usually far more appealing.

Not for me either. As someone from the medical profession, you must shake your head and think, "Are you crazy?" when you hear this kind of stuff.
