Gorgeous lyrics, indeed. As enjoyable are the copious annotations offered up by an army of critics who have parsed every syllable of this song and drawn connections to poets (Stevens, Eliot), an artist (Picasso), a musician (Leadbelly) and even a lullaby ("Row Row Row Your Boat").

To my mind, it's at once a simple and elegant road song. That Hunter wrote the lyrics while ensconced in the iconic Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan (a long way from San Francisco) further convinces me.

It is sad, on the anniversary of his passing, to be reminded that he died almost broke (though not in a "blue-light cheap motel"), not because he squandered his fortune, but because he consistently chose *artistry* over *business*.

Both his passing and Garcia's left a big hole in my lyric life May they be making new music together
