It is an iconic Dylan tune...and one that reminds us of the need to occasionally *separate* the artist from the human being. Suze Rotolo, about whom the song was allegedly written (she was also the *cover girl* on the song's album) was an authentic '60's Earth Goddess and deeply influenced Dylan. She was off-put with Dylan's *freewheeling* lifestyle (including his liaison with Joan Baez) and eventually went her own way. Dylan reacted scornfully and penned some bittersweet revenge-songs. He later admitted he was "a schmuck" for doing so. That said, I have a lot of respect for the *power* of negative energy. And Bob Dylan used it as effectively as any artist ever has.
