the birth and rebirth of the Sun King
the birth and rebirth of the Sun King it is the Dark Time...Night seems to have won over Day the fear that lurks in the back of one's mind is that this time the warmth of the Sun is lost forever and that the cold and dark have won the final victory. But Lo!! Look as the midwinter approaches the Sun stops in its path, hovers for three days and starts north again reborn to give the Earth hope. In ancient times the Sun was incarnated in the minds of the people as a god---often the penultimate one in the pantheon examples include Apollo in Greece, Osiris and Re in Egypt, Mithra in Iran (AKA Persia) and Lugh or Llew in the Celtic lands of Ireland and Scotland and of course the figure of Christ in most of the Western traditions. Myths and stories grew up around these figures For example Mithra was born on Dec 25 and basically went thru the same stages that Christ went thru in his life story before ritualistically being put to death as Christ was and spending three days in the underworld and being resurrected as Christ was. Another example is Egypt's Osiris who is murdered every year by the god of Darkness Set who interestingly enough is his twin brother. The Celtic Sun God Lugh is murdered in September (on the equinox) by his twin brother the God of Darkness Goronwy and reborn every year as Goronwy's on Dec 21. The common theme is that Darkness (not evil) kills Light for a time but that Light is always reborn in this case its on the 21st of December the middle of winter. the Lady Goddess (the Earth represented by Isis in Egypt, Blodwedd in the Welsh and Irish traditions Ceres in the Greek) gives birth to the reborn Sun King and transforms into the young Maiden that greets him early in the spring |
