Life in the Fast Lane or WTF

So, I'm not naive enough to think people are still all giving, friendly and able to coexist with their fellow man/woman on a consistent basis. But really, do people have to go out of their way to prove how narcissistic and rude they can actually be? I had two events happen in the last week or so, both out driving, that make me say , WTF people. One late last week, the other this morning.

First off, just for clarity and disclosure, I am not a "cautious" driver. Drive way too fast most of the time. I'm not a road rager though. I do talk to people a lot while I'm driving, like they can hear me. Not so proud of the fact that my youngest 17, has picked up my habit on that one. LOL Little stuff like when someone sits at a green light too long, "any particular shade of green you waiting on there buddy". Someone turning into a parking lot off a busy street at 2 MPH, "come on, you can do it. Yeah!!!, you made it safely off the street". Anyway, I digress.

Last week, I'm driving down a busy section of Bandera Road. Three lanes in each direction. I notice up ahead what looks like a traffic jam. Then I hear the horns going, people switching lanes. Think..ah...it's a wreck. As I get up closer I can see it's a car stalled in the middle lane. Everyone honking, people flipping the car off as they go around. I decide, fuck that. Pull my truck over into the right hand lane. Throw on the emergency lights and stop right beside her. Yeah, it's some teenage girl, bawling her eyes out cause her car was stalled.

So I get out, and walk over to her window, now there's more cars honking. People flipping me off, screaming things about my mother. I just smile and wave. I ask her whats up, she can barely get the words out, she's crying so much. I tell her I'm gonna push the car, to steer in front of my truck and then into the parking lot. At first I thought, damn you're getting old, when the car wasn't moving...then it dawned on me she had it in park. LOL So I get her ignition on, have her put it in Neutral, and we're off. Car's still honking and offering advice on some procreation matters, as they maneuver past us, but not a single one pulling over to give a hand. I'm like WTF people, really?!?!?!

Turns out she had a weak battery, and loose connections. I tightened her terminals, jumped the car and told her to either drive to the auto parts and get a battery or take it home. She gives me a hug, tells me thank you like 20 times, tries to offer me money. hahaha. Cute . As I'm driving off, I'm thinking what if that was my , and to all the asshats that didn't stop. What if that was your . WTF.

This morning, event two. I pull out on a access road. Going faster than I should as normal. Going into a turn around I notice a white SUV behind me. Sorta on my ass, but hell I figure that won't last long. As we come out the other side, I'm up to 60 in a 45 and he's still on me. Then pulls up besides me yelling , waving the arms around. You know, just intimidating as he thinks he can be. LOL. I smile, wave at him, and keep on driving. He gets tired of me and hits the gas. Then up ahead he's stuck behind some cars. So now he's doing his mad as hell spiel again, but directed at the driver of a black truck. He gets around that clog and off he goes. Yelling and waving at the driver of the black truck. So interested in letting us all know how we are just screwing up his entire life , he doesn't see the traffic stopped at the light in front of us. Bam, whacks a car stopped at the light.

So as I'm coming up on it, I pull off the road into a parking lot. I'm calling the cops to report the accident, and walking over. I'm there in time to here him yelling at the lady who's car he hit. LOL, dude, you hit a parked car. How is this her fault. WTF. I notice the guy in the black truck has pulled off the road and he's heading over too. The asshat notices me as I walk up and ask if everyone is ok. He starts to yell something at me, thinks for a second and just says , go away it's none of your business. I tell him, sure it is, I just called the cops to report the accident, and plan on sticking around to let them know what caused it. Dude is calming down a little, and now he's talking about how mom is going to kill him for wrecking her new car. LOL.

I'm talking to the now, explaining that he really needs to wise up. I'm getting older and a helluva lot calmer these days. 30 years ago, I'd have made him pull over and would have beat the crap out of him. These days, he's lucky someone didn't pull a gun out and shoot his ass. And all because, it's everyone else's fault that he can't drive the way he wanted to this morning. Or that he was in too much of a hurry to deal with everyone else trying to get somewhere too. Cops finally show up, I give him my statement and info, and I'm back off to work. WTF.

I know life is stressful. Hell, we're all in a hurry it seems these days. But people need to just chill out. Stop and help someone on the side of the road. Maybe someday, someone will return the favor. If you can't drive without having an mini aneurysm from the stress, maybe you shouldn't drive. Everyone just seems so angry and stressed these days. Maybe it's time to start re- learning how to co-exist with others, instead of just working to survive the day. And proving you've got the rude behavior down to a science.

Damn, I sound like I'm reverting back to the 60s.

I understand life is stressful, but I really don't get why so many people have become so rude. So unwilling to just take a minute and lend a helping hand. It's baffling to me.

Would you have stopped to help push? Or at least yell some encouragement, instead of bitching about the stalled car? You know like, "Come on old man, you've almost got her into the parking lot".

WTF people.

I have helped many random people on the road as well as being the "go to"when friends and family get jammed up. Thank you for paying it forward when you did. Although you are no where near me it gives me hope for other people. I was the hitee in an accident similar to that but nobody stepped up. The officer did the right thing but it took hours that I really didn't have to sort out the truth. Thank you for being human lol

Well, I can see your point, and without sounding sexist. I know some women can push a car just as good as a man. LOL Wouldn't expect her to in her heels .

It has become a different world than even the one I grew up in.

Good for you, on being a help.

Thing is, and this is the part I can't get my head around, I don't think it should be that big of a deal that either of us would stop to help. Isn't it just common courtesy?

I understand it's a busy world, but if we get too busy to be "human" as you put it, what's the point?

Thanks for sharing that.

IMO, the political climate, and economic, over the last couple decades has made many things more difficult.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

You just proved once again what an incredible nice guy you are. That young girl I am sure was so appreciative that you helped her. And you know your right I hope if that happened to your daughter that there would be someone like you come along and help her.

I had a morning like that where this lady had me speed up to 80 miles an hour as she was in such a damn hurry to get NO WHERE probably. There was so many trucks on the road and I was doing 70 just to get around them. So I know exactly how you feel, god forbid if I had hit my breaks, she would of plowed into me. And I had my senior friends with me who are twins and 75 years old and they definitely didn't that happening to them this morning.

I hope the rest of your day goes a lot better than your morning..

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

Annnnd...you say you're not road raging, but ummm...yeah, you got a tad bit of ragey going on there. 😜

Oh..not even close. Raging would have been like when I was twenty. When I was talking with him, we were both calm. If I'd have been ragey, I'd have been chasing him when he hit the lady. Not waving at him as he drove off.

I guess I can understand the caution , to some extent. But for me, I'd rather take the risk, than live life as that guy that just drove by the poor girl in her car.

I have to agree. To me it's not speeding unless I'm 20 miles over the speed limit.

Missed that comment. I think you're right to an extent..But is it the politics that are making people more bitchy, or are bitchy people just ranting about the Politics. I'm not sure which one it is to be honest.

I think it's an age thing as well... I've become a more conscientious, kinder and more patient driver over the years.. I slow down at red lights now...

Well thanks trzzz...but again. Why does stopping to help someone make me a nice guy? Damn, you would think there would have been 10 people in front of me that would have stopped. I don't get it. Really don't.

I drive fast as hell on the highway...probably would have passed both of you haha..that said. The Idiots that are tailgating people at 70 miles per hour have been watching too much NASCAR. At that speed, there's little time to react, and shit hits the fan really quick.

The rest of the day was great. Besides me being depressed, that I now have a kid who is 30 years old. Crap, how the hell did that happen.

Watch it...you don't want to get too conscientious. I consider most of those red lights still in the pink stage. Just saying.

We have hero units here, highway emergency response officer, who will come to your aid when stalled or a flat and they will dispatch a cop to help with traffic. I do see truckers will stop to help a lady if needed. There are some wonderful men around to help but we don’t hear of those much. Just the asshats like that guy. The most dangerous on the road is the aggressive driver, as bad a a drunk. You did a good thing and I am sure you would not just leave her there, unlike the other jerks.

Maybe it's how we were raised..but you never passed anyone on the highway, without asking if they needed help. Think everyone is just in too much of a rush these days.

I was thinking about your earlier comment too..And I have to add.

At least I wasn't veering out of my lane, checking someone out. Like someone we all know and love...hmmmm who was that again. LOL

I have to admit I talk to people when I'm driving. I like to think of it more like venting than road rage. I'm not the type to actually do more than just talk...and they can't hear me. lol But I've also helped people I was with a friend one day and we had gone to Sears and while in the parking lot noticed a young woman having problems with her car. We went over and asked what was wrong. She had no idea but it turns out she had a battery cable that was corroded and keeping the car from starting. My friend and I went in the automotive dept and got a new cable and installed it for her and sent her on her merry way.

Well like I said..I'm not real proud that I seem to have taught my youngest that trait. The other night we were going out to dinner..some car in front of us is going ten miles under the speed limit. She says, "come on buddy, I could walk faster than that." I've created a monster.

Good for you and your friend. It's those little things that really make life so much better. For ourselves and everyone around us.
