Flint, Michigan

When you think of Flint, Michigan what do you think of? All of the negative headlines such as, tainted water, high murder, and crime rates, lack of jobs, and a poor public education system. All these things are true, but it does not define the city, or the people that call Flint home.

To have a better idea of the city, and its people, maybe we should start with some of its history. Flint started out as a village by fur trader Jacob Smith in 1819. Flint's biggest business at that time was in lumber due to the heavily forested area. In 1855 the City of Flint was established.

At the turn of the century, the automobile came about, and shortly after Flint became a mainstay of this new industry. When people think of General Motors, they tend to think of Detroit, but General Motors was started in Flint by William C. Durant. The UAW also has strong roots in Flint. In 1936-37 UAW members banded together in what is known today as the "Sit Down Strike"

Flint is know for its poor public education K-12, but it is also know for its higher learning. The City of Flint has a satellite campus for the University of Michigan which is one of the top ranking public universities in the country. Flint also hosts Kettering University which used to be named GMI or General Motors Institute, that churns out gifted engineering students, Flint also has Mott Community College, Michigans School for the Deaf, and various schools of nursing.

In need of a hospital? Flint has you covered. The City has two major hospitals in McLaren, which tends to specialize in cardio vascular, and Hurley Hospital, which is a teaching hospital. Hurley also has the distinction of being a Level 1 Trauma Center, and has one of the top Bariatric Programs in the nation.

Are there any famous people from Flint? Yes. Flint has many famous athletes such as Andre Rison (Atlanta Falcons), Glenn Rice (Miami Heat), Carl Banks (NY Giants), and my favorite Jim Abbott (NY Yankees). Jim is my favorite, because the man made it to MLB with basically one arm. Add is factors like my uncle had the same birth defect, and I grew up with Jim's cousin, and its easy to see why Jim is my favorite. Musicians Flint has them. Ever heard of Grand Funk Railroad? Yes they are from Flint. Ready for the World with the hit song (Oh Sheila). Flint has even had a rapper by the name of Mc Breed put his stamp on the Record Industry...may he RIP. Actors from Flint, but of course. Terry Crews from movies like Last Friday, and the Expendables. Tony Burton who was the trainer of Apollo Creed in the Rocky movies. Game show host Bob Eubanks is another Flint Native. Michael Moore claims to be from Flint, but he is not, so fuck him!

Flint might be a violent place, with dangerous water, and people. Sure its a bit dirty, and run down. The people of Flint are of strong minds, and bodies. If you knock us down...we will get back up We have been carved from "Rock", and if you are from Flint you will understand what that means. Flint, and Flintstones will always fight no matter the odds. I hope after reading this you might think of my City as more than a headline.
