THAT LOVE NEVER WAS

Once a vagrant,
Solitary and complacent,
Without a thing near my heart,
No one worthy of amazement.

You came to me unexpectedly,
With no warnings or arrangements.
Just like that our hearts were enveloped,
With a joyous comfort that we need not develop.

Why has our great joy, our love, already met its end?

The answer, my sweet Jennifer, you’ll need no defense.
So simple and true, with it. I could not even contend.
The fearful thoughts were quick to seize my mind,
For the truest love, like ours, is rarest to find.

While jealous and non trusting I plagued our chances,
The chance to grow together, our chance at happiness,
Our chances I crushed and crumbled into nothingness,
I am responsible for our sorrows, this unhappiness.

So alone I shall suffer this ache in my chest,
The weight and pain of again feeling heartlessness.
You were right, sweetest Jennifer, just like the rest,
My spirit is torn and scared, perhaps unable to trust.
