The Masquerade

Part One

I had been invited to a major soiree, at the mansion of a rather influential family of means. Old time money, those that gyrated in well known circles... you know the sort. The party, or should I say the masquerade was still several months away and even then I was floored I'd been invited. I did not run in those circles, unless it consisted of taking their trays to their tables at the exclusive yuppity, uppity club they all practically lived at. You know the stuffy kind of people that love to look down their surgically altered noses at the little people. The kind I could barely stand... and yet I had the chance of getting just a taste of their life, if only for one night. The very envelope the invitation had arrived in was thick, hand made paper, and the writing upon it was literally etched into the paper, in thick, dark, bold strokes of the blackest ink. It had been sealed with wax, and an impression of a family crest was within the cranberry colored seal. I'd been so careful to not crack that seal when I had opened it. Prying it from the paper it had been infused on, leaving it whole to the flap once I had opened it to extract the invitation within. Another thick piece of paper, this one engraved with gold lettering. My full name was there in cursive script. Every little detail seemed finely tuned and as I read, a smile rose on soft lips. Pearly whites entrapping the bottom tier which I worried as I read. One of the grandest of parties and I had the key to get in... but did I have the gall, and gumption to attend... or even the funds to make it plausible. I had time to scrimp and save. I had time to craft an appropriate costume... I had time... did I have the balls!? Yeah... I did!

Rather thankful for my simple, frugal upbringing and roots I set to work collecting what I needed over the passing weeks. Fabrics of silk and lace, and other needed supplies. Naughty, enticing bits here and there, added to the pile of “ingredients” that I would handcraft into something no one would have ever seen, and no one could buy. Just a plain Jane I was... always invisible to most. For to me things like makeup, nails, and other foo foo girlie things weighed rather heavy on ones wallet, and even their health. That stuff was always for the rare occasion and even then when used it was always a light touch. Days and nights off was spent measuring... cutting... designing... sowing, sometimes into the wee hours. Making something from nothing but a pile of things that I had selected with a keen eye. A gown literally bloomed over time, over the shape of my standing dress form. Long, flowing... and rather regal looking, yet striking in its shade and appearance. Rich hues of black, emerald, and hints of gold. Small jewels and embellishments placed here and there to tease the roving eye. I made it so it looked like the gowns royalty wore, without the needless weight and layers, yet it looked like it had those layers regardless. In the end I was proud of my handy work and draped a dust cover over it after I had tried it on for the last time. Moving and sitting to ensure it was well tailored to my form. The last weeks were spent finding those little odds and ends that would complete the look. I even made the mask I was to wear. Wanting to keep myself a total mystery for that entire evening...
