On Today's Episode of.... "What NOT to Wear when you're an Applicant" I was headed back to my office when I heard my name being paged overhead. "Goddammit! I was just up there waiting for that fucking applicant. How much do you want to bet they just showed up, 10 minutes late." Fuming, I growled to myself, turned around, and headed back to the front of the store. As I approached the desk, I scanned the people who were milling about, looking for someone remotely resembling someone who would be a potential applicant. From the corner of my eye I could see a woman, late 20's, wearing a sparkly, pink unicorn hat, complete with gold horn, unicorn leggings, a Little Mermaid face mask, and a floral looking peasant dress. Shaking my head in disbelief, I approached a woman who was standing alone and appeared to be waiting for someone. "Hi! Are you Rosanna Bandana?" "Uh... No! I'm just waiting for my husband to get done." "Oh, Ok. My apologies." Fucking Bitch! At some point, you're going to need help from me, and, I hold a grudge... "Hello, I'm Rosanna Bandana." I knew instantly, from the sound of the whiny, high pitched tone, it was Unicorn Lady. Turning slowly, I could see her coming toward me, light up shoes lighting up the entire way. "Hi Rosanna." Fantastic I spent the next 30 minutes watching everyone and their brother walk past my office to get a look at the crazy lady wearing the unicorn crap. Coworkers were howling with laughter off in the distance, the word spread fast. At one point, she pulled out a sparkly, bejeweled notebook to take down some notes as I spoke. "Wow...." I had to shield my eyes a little. "That's a lot of bling." "Yah, I like shiny things." "That does not surprise me." So, here I now sit, thankful the employees where I work have to wear a uniform. We did hire Unicorn Lady as poor taste does not disqualify someone from being able to work with us, but I'm a little worried. We have quite a few holiday dress down days coming up.... I can't even imagine what we have in store for us. |

 You paint such a funny picture McLade, and you do it so well!I reckon the girl should have been employed just for comedy value alone. When I hired staff I used to consider their attire and would often look down on someone who was a little off the wall as being not quite the professional image we were looking to project......but I realised that every organisation needs characters, people who are a little different, because they contribute in ways that are far less obvious but no less important. I'm looking forward to hearing about next year's halloween party, if she's still there!! It was at that point I decided, I like her. She's a keeper. She looks a little cray-cray... But I think I can work with it.

Working with the public and selling a product is a whole lot different from giving a boss a stat. Do you think you could confidently accept fashion advice from Unicorn Lady if she were selling you an outfit for a special event?

You paint such a funny picture McLade, and you do it so well! I reckon the girl should have been employed just for comedy value alone.  Secret  In a 56 year working life, I only had 4 Job interviews, 2 of those were with the same company! Hope Ms Bandana doesn't let you down, I wonder how she will individualise her uniform

I am a bit older, but I would expect someone coming for a job interview to dress to show respect . You are NOT what you wear, so shoving your "style" into someone else's face is bad manners. And while it may have no bearing on your work capabilities, it certainly has a bearing on your attitude towards work, which is, almost always, much more important. I do hope she is an excellent worker for you. And, yes, I would have interviewed her. But she would have had a very steep uphill battle to get the job starting out like that. If you have not, do her a favor and let her know that she was ALMOST rejected out of hand due to her not taking your workplace into consideration when she dressed. Unless, of course, your business is Children's entertainment. In which case she was appropriately dressed for the interview!

I have a question. Is she single? Ok not really. But unicorns are just sooooo cool! As a former Wally World employee, I know all too well that mental stability is not a requirement for employment. Nor is bad fashion sense. All that matters is how they interact with the public (sometimes) and more importantly that they show up on time and do the damn work. So kudos on hiring unicorn girl. Yes her goofy demeanor will be either annoying or entertaining depending on your mileage. But come on. Crazy people are more fun. Hands down.

Like "Lala" it is a coin toss, I have hired some with qualification out the waszoo and then next week give them a day off to look for a job, and then some one will show up and really surprise you,, most of the time you never know till the work starts, Best of luck and here's hoping!!!

I had to take a semester long class in college all about hiring ettiquette..... She broke every single rule. Late, dressed inapropriately, had to use the restroom in the middle of our meeting.... Ugh

I believe it should be a requirement for every high School student to work a public job for at least six months before being allowed to Graduate ! The complaints would be less and the respect for a public worker would be much greater !! Thank You, for bring this to our attention !!

I bet you see it all. My boss interviewd a young woman some years ago. She did not turn her phone off. After telling the boss of her broken face from falling in the boat while drunk, her phone rang with the ringtone blaring the greeting with the word, fuck, in it. We are medical professionals. She was not hired. Don’t know why.
