The Over Thinker
The Over Thinker I am... The Classic Over Thinker You can rest assured that, no matter the situation, I've mulled it over, thought about every possible outcome, and already jumped to the worst possible conclusion in my mind. Yah, fun stuff. Soooo.... What do you do when someone reaches out to you for help with their own over thinking? Work BFF messaged me earlier because he was falling victim to his own thoughts, over thinking his recent first date and jumping to all the wrong, bad conclusions. I silently empathized with him, I have thought all those same thoughts many times over. I knew exactly what he was feeling. I tried not to sound like a complete loser, but I told him I was not the best person for advice in such matters as I ALSO am my own worst enemy. He thought it was funny and we chatted a bit about the irony of it all... But the fact is, even as I sit here writing this post, my mind is a million miles away, mulling over my days events, focusing on my insecurities. |

"Time to get out of your head, And get into the booty." -Puscifer, 'Lighten Up, Francis' I, also, am subject to the monkey-brain taking over if I'm not keeping it in check, and like a monkey's brain this is largely about anticipating and avoiding threats ... it's fear. My particular answer to this is to try to get out of my head and into my body. What this entails is usually one of two things, depending on where I am in time and space when it hits me. One option is to engage in some kind of physical activity that requires my attention and cannot generally be done on autopilot; yoga works for me in this regard, but anything that links your breathing to movement will work as long as long as you have to pay attention to what your body is actually doing. The other option, more common for me in public spaces, is to take inventory of what my 5 senses are doing at that moment : right now I hear two different clocks ticking, my dog breathing in the next room, the click of the furnace downstairs and the blower turning on, and the hum of the overhead light; under the smell of the morning's coffee there is still the scent of cayenne from last night's chili; the air entering my nostrils is just below body temp, I am apparently not sitting dead center in my chair as the framework on one side is pressing against a buttock, I am aware of the table pressing against my forearms as I type this and the varying pressure on my two feet in different positions beneath me .... this kind of thing. Both options, for me, tend to slow down the internal hamster wheel quite a bit and leave me feeling a bit more grounded.

Well, that is me to a tee. I analyze issues, situations.. turning them over and over in my mind in the hope of finding the missing element in the dilemma at hand. Very good trait to have when writing, but a wheel-spinner when it comes to everyday situations. Sometimes you gotta let things go.

I. m full of positive advice about THOSE times. I'd say hit the bottle 🍾 or smoke a joint... It'll take the edge off. Housework also helps. Get busy with something. 😊👍❗⭕🔥💦
