 I don't refer to them as 'ASSociates' but merely 'Acquaintances'. To me, a 'Friend' is someone I know and trust and not some faceless person I've never met on-line. It's someone who has been to my house, shared a beverage or two with, perhaps even broken bread with. I know them personally and I also know allot about them, not just that they choose to share with me.

There's an old joke that a friend is someone who will help you move a couch. A 'Good' friend would help you move a body.... *grins*
