Have a Merry Christmas and a Very Good New Year. It would be marvellous if your wishes came true.

Hi 1sb:

I'm sorry to hear of the "fun" that you've had. I agree that dementia are debilitating diseases even for those not directly with it. Everyone around is afflicted.

As a bit of a side-note, this may be helpful for one/some of your readers. It kind of pertains to any long term home health care situation. Diane Rehm, WAMU in DC, did a show in August, 2014 with Meryl Comer. They addressed some of the initially unrecognized issues with care-giving. I'm sure that you could relate as I can also. On the face of it, it's pretty much you against the world.

Last month, there was a conference for Alzheimer care givers at Dover Downs. It was sponsored by the Delaware Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer Association. (Previously, it was called the Annual Delaware Dementia Conference.) Their website has a resource section for care-givers. It may be helpful.

For whatever reason, a lot of program are not made known to the public. IIRC, (Radio Times [WHYY]?) there was a guest on a few years ago. The guest discussed some of the little know resources available through different agencies. This ran the gamut from a mental health break to being paid for the care-giving.

The agencies ran the gamut from federal to county; i.e. DHS, state Department of Aging, County Department of Health, etc. While no one in their right mind would trade for the experience, some of the programs can help make coping a little bit easier.

The Pulse (WHYY) did a piece, in March, 2016, addressing getting financial assistance through Medicare for some of the costs. It simply required the doctor to get on-board and "prescribe".

BTW, I will be in your area on the 9th if you have time for a late lunch.

I trust that you and yours will have a safe and Merry Merry!

Ciao, Bella.

G

Curing Alzheimer's and Cancer are wonderful wishes and we can all agree that we want this. Obviously these are not simple diseases - there's unlikely to be a "cancer vaccine" that cures it like polio (would be nice). I would also wish for something that's more attainable and within our power to influence. And that is tolerance and understanding. My mom has Alzheimer's and even her close friends don't know how to act around her. She struggles mightily in the grocery store and interacting with people she doesn't know is almost impossible. In general, people don't have the patience to deal with someone who is struggling mentally. They can't see what's wrong so they just assume that the person is an idiot. Now this is not true across the board - there are lots of nice and kind people. But we really need to educate the general populace in dealing with people afflicted with mental (and physical) diseases and we can all do our part towards that. Personally, I would love to see you at 100, 1sweet! You'll always be gorgeous. Thanks for the post and as always, God bless!

Yeah, I lost my mother 10 years ago to cancer. There are still days where I think of something or something happens in my life and I say to myself that I'll like telling her about it. Then I remember she's not there to hear it. My aunt has said she still occasionally will think of something to talk to my mom about as well. You never get over it, but my mother had a great sense of humor, so I think about that whenever I'm really missing her.
