Not Tonight

He sent her a message
Said he was in town
Asked for her number
They texted
Exchanged pics
He called
She answered
He invited
She politely turned him down
He questioned her reasoning
And she replied
Their evening was over
Before it began
Dumbfounded he was by her refusal
so sure of how the night would go down
It could have been the time of her life
But a night with him was not in the plans

And maybe he presented himself a bit differently when he initially messaged her, but when they talked on the phone he wanted her to race over there. According to his first message, he was in her town all the time and was looking for something ongoing. And then when they spoke, he acted like everything had to happen right then and there.

I loved this gem and have been on both sides: the framing of oneself as looking for something ongoing, and the thinking with the other head impulse.. this poem is thoughtful.
