The Assassination of Berta Cáceres

Assassination of Berta Cáceres, Last Years Winner of the World's Leading Environmental Award

March 4, 2016

'Our people come face to face here with dignity, capacity, resistance, intelligence and ancient strength.'

'Let us wake up, humankind! We are out of time. We must shake our conscious free of the rapacious capitalism, racism, and patriarchy which will only assure our own self destruction.' -Quotes of Berta Cáceres

The vicious brutality of the capitalist system has no bounds. The killing of the beautiful and brave Berta Cáceres, who wanted nothing more than for her and her people to live in peace, is simply the latest example. Last year, Berta won the Goldman Environmental Prize, the most prestigious environmental award on the globe. May her memory inspire all of us to cast this cruel and bloody system into the dustbin of history.

Berta was not simply a world-renowned environmentalist. She was fighting for a whole new social system in which wealth would be used for the benefit of the people. This assassination demonstrates exactly what the capitalist masters think of this approach to social relations.

Hundreds of soldiers and officers in Honduras have been trained in political assassination and torture by the US military at the formerly named "School of the Americas" in Fort Benning, Georgia. The involvement of the US in this area is direct: US soldiers and aircraft have opened fire on and killed people in the area of the Patuca River, where Berta has mobilized the people to oppose destruction of their homeland.

From 2010 to 2014, poverty in Honduras increased from 60% of the population to 62.8%. Every year, Honduras runs a $100 million current account deficit, with the bulk of these deficits running to the apex capitalist countries. In this sense, the situation in Honduras typifies the relationship of the apex capitalist states to the developing world.

We may now evaluate world capitalism as a system so strong and confident, that it considers it absolutely necessary to murder a woman for her ideas.

Karl Marx in Volume I of Capital gave a brief summary of the treatment of indigenous peoples by the system of capitalism. Here is the concluding sentence of that section:

'If money, according to Augier, 'comes into the world with a congenital blood-stain on one cheek,' capital comes dripping from head to foot, from every pore, with blood and dirt.'
