HSV

I read a lot of profiles and so many say they are DDF and prefer their partners be too. I just have to wonder how many truly are Drug/Disease Free. Studies say that 85% of us have the HSV (herpes) virus in us, but most people don't realize it because they have never had an outbreak.

I am tired of privately telling folks that I talk with that I have herpes/HSV and have decided to "come clean" and put it in a blog......

I was infected 8 or 9 years ago by someone I lived with who also had the virus. He told me he wasn't contagious as long as he didn't have an outbreak. I truly believe he did not deliberately lie to me about this - I think he was just misinformed. If you've read my profile, you know that I do like to play with other partners, sometimes more than one at a time. However, before I even knew about the HSV, I insisted on condoms for all the other sex partners. So pretty sure my lover was the carrier.
Anyway........I didn't find out until about 5 years ago. Had never had any kind of outbreak, but learning of my sexual history, my doctor recommended getting tested. I thought I had been tested, having been tested for HIV and being cleared of that. What I didn't know was that there are different tests for each disease. Nice, huh?
Well, needless to say, I kind of freaked out and with my stress levels being so high, I got my first and only outbreak. I researched it and discovered there is more of a stigma to it than anything and my one outbreak wasn't too bad, so I just kind of forgot about it. If I was going to play with anyone, I insisted on condoms. I admit, I didn't always tell them about my "condition" - not because I'm a terrible person, but because I truly wouldn't think about it.
But now............
Chemo has wrecked my immune system. Because of that, the shingles were able to slip in in August and September of last year. It is a form of herpes, I found out...... Worst lingering pain of my life. And then, right on it's heals, when the pain was finally dissipating, I had a break out down below. Equally as painful. After two rounds of treatment, it went away, but was back again Christmas day and treatments aren't touching it.
Needless to say, I am very discouraged and desperately want to get back to feeling like playing on line, at the very least. Praying we can get this taken care of before the summer.

So......if you are a fellow infected, you have a friend in me. We can commiserate our mutual troubles together.

I have to agree with you. A large percentage of the population carry the virus and are completely unaware. As for the shingles, anyone who has had the chicken pox can have an outbreak. Sorry to hear about the chemo. Round three for me, started this week. Feel your pain. Kudos for bringing this info to the table.

Sending love and hugs to you as you go through your next round of chemo. I am on pills now - supposed to have minimal side effects, but the few I have are pretty nasty.
Hope you do okay on this round.

Yep. I get what you are dealing with.

I got the H when I was 22 (in 1980). It was never much of a bother then, and I was ALWAYS up front about it. To my knowledge, to this day, I have never passed it on (and I would have heard about it). I'm more reserved though now, about taking on partners for sexual fun.

At 36 I got hit with a severe arthritis condition and have basically been on low-level chemo-therapy ever since then. (Most arthritis is treated by suppressing the immune system. Brilliant, eh?)

Even with all that I was able to control it pretty well, until after I hit 50+. Now at 58 it is manageable, but I have to be a lot more careful. I'm still on various arthritis meds, so it is still easier to get an outbreak, and it takes longer to recover.

Stress is a major trigger. Be mellow, roll up a big spliff, praise Jah! ... {jk} ... But seriously... Eating well, staying fit, getting adequate rest, and reducing stress will work wonders.

I've been on this site pretty much continuously since 1990. It is very rare that I get responses to my efforts to reach-out for companionship here, so consequently that is not really why I am on this site. (Most ladies I know will tell you I am handsome and charming, so that is not the problem.) {sigh}

Best of wishes on your recovery.

You can still have fun, even with others, it just takes a lot more more patience.

Thank you so much for sharing. Posting this blog has been kind of cathartic to me - a load off my mind and I have really appreciated the kind responses.
Your profile says you are in SW Oregon. I go to CO, OR every summer for 3+ weeks for a working vacation. Perhaps we should meet for dinner one of the weekends I am there. Just an idea.
Thanks again, for your openness as well!

BTW... Yes... A LOT more folks have HSV that either do not know it, or know it and do not admit it... including here.

I am not disputing your numbers, but I was under the impression that about 20% of the population is infected with HSV. I was also under the impression that about 85% of the population carries HPV with the vast majority non-symptomatic. I'm sure a goooogle search or a search of the CDC website will be able to provide more definitive numbers. Good luck with your recovery.

smiles - I was just repeating what my midwife friend who is helping me out said. She might have been exaggerating some because I was reading some info and the site I found said 50%. But the bottom line is that there are a boat load of folks who have it.
Thanks for your response!

Most will run for the hills when you tell them you have HSV, unless they also have it. The rare one that stays may be a keeper....at least for a while. And you do know that condoms only reduce the chance of contracting/spreading HSV, not eliminate it. In conjunction with Valtrex it reduces spreading by 75% (according to my doc). And it can be spread without having an outbreak, something about the cells "shedding". I have never had an outbreak and found out I "got it" when I became more sexually active later in life and got tested for the whole gamut of STDs.

That was kind of why I put it out there, too - if they are going to run for the hills, I want it to be before I start chatting and develop a fondness for someone.
I am perfectly fine with my state of "romance", lovers - that kind of thing, at this time and am mostly on here to keep up with established friends. Of course, making new friends is always on the table as well. Thank you for sharing your experience with me. This has certainly boosted my spirits.
