Oh that sucks my friend I hope they get that strike under control soon so that people can start getting their mail again. My ex worked for the Postal Service and I never heard of them going on strike. But hey they got paid good, can't say the benefits were that great though, always changes with those..

Well The US did have a strike by the USPO in 1970 quot;In early 1970, National Guardsmen were spotted walking from door to door in neighborhoods throughout the United States. They weren’t conducting a military operation or helping clean up after a natural disaster—they were delivering the mail in the midst of a postal strike that almost brought the United States to a halt. " It lasted 8 days in 30 cities Due to other factors beyond pay, the turnover rate of employment at that time was a whopping 23%. To add to the workers' insult Congress was talking about giving themselves a 41% pay hike { when all they often do is sit on their asses and have health coverage etc!!} while they offered the postal workers 5.4%. It still is illegal for government workers to strike in USA. This incident was a wildcat strike- meaning it went against the union wishes and regulations. Back then the post office was doing 270 million pieces of mail daily (Virtual Symposium Group) use Virtual Symposium Group

Anyway I am for righteous pay. I often wishes that department store employees had a union. Clerks get screwed big time and the turn over is outrageous. It was tough enough making ends meet on hourly pay with no raises and the COLA was pennies. I agree that today's young people are in for a rude surprise. They are so used to instant gratification they are ill-equipped emotionally or financially to cope with employment interruption or the meaning of what a strike can accomplish (Virtual Symposium Group) use Virtual Symposium Group

Yes, to be in position to bargain with management, my wife, brings up mixed emotions for me. I feel, I deserve better working conditions but forget higher pay because as her husband I am not a gigolo! Become a Apollorising2057 blog watcher!

I worked permit as a Iron Worker the summers of 70 and 71, paying a weekly fee to work on union jobs. I became a member of the Iron Workers in the fall of 72, I am still a full dues paying card carrying member. Someday I will become a Honorary member, half price dues, until death stops me. I also had a Teamster card, I took a withdraw in 72, and might be able to reactivate that card, doubt I will but......never crossed a picket and never would,,,I have walked picket...and have been out on strike....couple of months the longest one. Got to like a career that allows one to work anywhere in the world...could have worked in Canada too.. Many parts of my family and extended family are Iron Workers out of the Detroit, MI local.

I worked retail before joining the Teamster and Iron Workers unions and after I retired too...I know to well what the non union sector of employment can be like... Union is the way to be. Unfortunately this country's government from the federal to local levels and many businesses are trying to end unions. Their mistake...better to dance with the devil than make an enemy of the devil. eh!

was in a union with the lead negotiator owned 10% of the company. How do you get a fair deal there?

Hi Joy. thanks for sharing this informative post. I can see both sides. I myself have never belonged to a Union, although, I worked jobs where they existed. reminded me of this one... The Black Eyed Peas - "Union" Let's start a union, calling every human It's one for all and all for one Let's live in unison, calling every citizen It's one for all and all for one We don't want war, can't take no more It's drastic time for sure We need a antidote and a cure Coz do you really think Mohamed got a problem with Jehovah We don't want war imagine if any prophet was alive In current days amongst you and I You think they'd view life like you and I do Or would they sit and contemplate on why Do we live this way, act and behave this way We still live in primitive today Coz the peace in the destination of war can't be the way There's no way, so people, just be a woman, be a man Realize that you can't change the world by changing yourself And understand… To leave private messages, please use my confidential mailbox at my blog: Good luck!!!

I'm not going to make a long comment......in short, I'm a retired LCUC (CUPW) worker who worked for over 37 years....I just want my pension. I did cross a picket line to deliver pension checks to seniors who needed them!

I worked for the Provincial Government of British Columbia, for 37 1/2 y.ears, as a proud member of the British Columbia Government Employees Union. I have walked a picket line, and the longest I can recall being on strike was perhaps a week or so. I have never, and will never, cross a picket line. Former Local Union President, Local Vice-President, Local Secretary, and Regional Vice - President here. Also served a Grievance Chairman for my local for many years as well, never loosing a grievance. I bargained with Management on more contracts than I care to remember. The last one talking with them for over a year before we came to an agreement. At issue? Health Care, and Managements ceaseless efforts to do away with our department. Their rational was they could get a private company to do our jobs better for less. After a year, of sometimes bitter back and forth with Management I, along with my team actually secured an agreement letting the workers retain their jobs, make gains in their health care, and yes even increase their pay ( though a modest increase) over a four year agreement. In the next election I was voted out of office as the President, loosing the majority of the members votes because they thought "I didn't do enough for them" . I guess there's no pleasing everyone.

I was in a Union many years ago. I was a recent hire and was laid off in a cut-back, which is illegal. They did nothing for me.
