You're right about manners. It seems older people might have less manners than some younger people I know.

The only difference to me is a lady in black instead of a lady in red!
I leave it to others to decide if my parents taught me well!

Whilst out on a jaunt on Lucille yesterday...Stopped at three cycle shops...One to collect a check for some consignments sold...One the local H-D dealer that I like and a little store that opened recently in town...I think it's pretty standard for folks to ask: "How are you?"...My standard reply is "Peachy...All fuzzy...You?"...Usually elicits a chuckle and a smile...The guy at the consignment shop was rather non plussed...Exchanged some chit chat about the forthcoming Oyster Run this Sunday...They're promising fresh Coffee & Doughnuts so I'll be stopping by on my way...Can't pass up free stuff...It's in the by-laws...Then wandered the back way to a branch of my Credit Union to deposit the check...Once again the query of "How are you?" Met with my standard reply...Very cute teller laughed out loud...A very good sign...Wander to the H-D dealer displaying 2019 models...Which I perused a bit...Wandered 'round the place...Went to the closeout table and spotted some button head hex screws that I purchased...The guy who helped me at the register was brand new...First day and obviously was struggling...Asking for help several times...Told him I'd put him through the full monty by using my card...All the while he was beating himself up over his lack of skill during check out...I offered...It only gets easier the more one does it...Routine only gets better with practice...With his attitude...He's not going to last very long...I was hoping for some espresso there but the cafe was closed...Off again on the Blue Highway back towards home...Stop at Bikers & Babes on Broadway...This little store holds a fond place in my heart...On a scamper with my crazy Harmonica playing buddy earlier this year I noticed that my 100th Anniversary Bell had gone missing...The tale is told how the bell keeps the Road Gremlins away and it must be a gift in order for it to work...The little blond gal initially thought I was her hubby showing up...Our rides are similar...I told her of my problem...She immediately gave me a bell...For free...I tried to pay but she wasn't having it...I thanked her profusely...Promising to return in future for a proper purchase...Then proceeded to put up a write up on FB about what transpired...When I arrived she welcomed me with "How are you?"...I offered my standard to which she delivered a belly laugh...I was in the market for a new pinky ring...The one with my birthstone had gone missing...Perused her main case...Found a marvelous silver ring with a black onyx to match my other pinky ring...We talked about business and how it had been going since last I'd been there..."Doing so much better in this location..." she offered...She asked if I would stop by to see her in Anacortes this coming Sunday so I could meet her hubby...I replied that I certainly would...She's taking some really cool shirts to sell...All in all...A real good meander for me & Lucille...Manners are something to be appreciated...If others are lacking...It's good manners to just say nothing...Blog and let Blog...I'll be in the Garage...

I thought it was just me getting old, but I despair at the lack of manners the kids show these days. When they answer back to a teacher or even their own parents, you know something is wrong.

Manners and politeness costs nothing yet it seems a very alien concept to some people.

The NOW and Immediate Gratification generation has not clue one about respect and manners. Quite often those two go hand in hand or should. What happened in the laundry was beyond rude. Sorry, my friend, but I could not have kept quiet. I would not have been rude to her but something would have been said ( " Mr Jones did you notice that she does not talk to strangers. Maybe i should introduce you!!) and then introduce myself to her as well.
I love that WD had a great morning- he got to see it all

Joy, it seems to me that ignorance and bad manners is everywhere these days but it also seems that it is ageless affecting all walks of life as well.

Your so right my friend it's up to parent to make sure their children are brought up with the proper manners and morals.

Good for you, for shaking your head and rolling your eyes at her, me I would of made a smart ass comment. How rude, you know I got to the laundry mat often too and were always talking to others as it's a nice way to kill time there.

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

Rudeness & bad manners have become fashionable these days, and THAT SUCKS! I often am in pain, especially if I am out & about, and the cute little greetings I get from shop workers seem to irratate me to no end because I FEEL BAD, not their fault, nor mine, but it still bothers me to hear such at times. BUT, If I responded in the way my body tells my mind to respond, I would be labled an old curmugeon, OR what ever the generation uses in the place of that word today. I try to smile, even tho nit can be hard, I try to be pleasent, even if I really dont wanna be, I try to not load my issues on the rest of the world, cuz when my shoulders can no longer bear my burdens, then it will be time to quit, BUT for now, I carry on, and try to be the best person I can be to those around me, hard as it may be, CUZ THAT IS BEING HUMAN, at least I was taught that many years ago anyway!

My kids have great manners...and my grand daughters as well. (My oldest grand daughter's second word was "please")

I still get complements for how great my kids are...kind, generous of their time, and respectful to every one. It makes me proud that they value those traits.

My parents taught me to give a shit, care about the other person, help others out, but for some reason, when talking to them about politics, they don't care about the other person, don't give a shit, don't think it's their job to help others out. I've always been amazed by their hypocrisy.

Author, I do agree with your sentiments here. I believe we have been taught now to believe the worse in someone instead of the best. We seem to be quick to judge that someone is out to harm, take advantage or just be an ass to us. I have an example here as well, an elderly family member as well will go through this. He is of the generation as well where you greet someone with a smile and a friendly hello. He also loves children. You see where I am going? In grocery stores where you will see many mothers with toting their young children along is where this takes place. He is the first to come up to a mother with a huge smile and say how cute their child is. You can see the fear in the mothers face too many times, probably more so than not. Is he an old pervert? I hope he doesn't come near us. In actuality, he is a loving older gentleman who loves to see a child play and the innocence that they have. I myself feel awkward when he does this because you can see what they are thinking about him, and he is totally oblivious of this because that of course is the furthest from his mind. Our society has become less open and civil, especially what I see with our neighbors from the south. I hope it doesn't last long.

Hi Joy.

thanks for sharing the kind thoughts...

There are all kinds of people in this world... most are easy_going... but, some are not... and, never will be...

reminded me of this...

although, I can't fix anybody... I love this song...

Coldplay - "Fix You"

When you try your best but you don't succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse
When the tears come streaming down your face
'Cause you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
What could it be worse?
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you
But high up above or down below
When you are too in love to let it show
Oh but if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you
Tears come streaming down your face
When you…

Who knows what kind of day she was having but her reply was wrong. A simple "yes" maybe including "is a nice day" would have been a proper reply.
I hope your friend was not to put off by the woman. You did the right thing too by not confronting the woman..Very tempting indeed.
We see people every day and that is all we see,,,not what issues they maybe dealing with...some deal with these issues better than others. At least in public.
