The Gesture In Question. A Poem

It's a simple act
That I rarely
Get to practice.
Not that practice
Will ever make
This act perfect.
Because it is
Not perfection
That is sought
But simple
Affection
And comfort.

Couples do it
Parents do it too
With their
Friends do it
In moments of stress
Or celebration
Celebrities do it
Awaiting award winners'
Names in an envelope
To be read.

Have you figured it out?
Have you figured out
The gesture?
It's what I would
Like to do
With a loving partner.
It's what I would like
To put my own stamp on
Just a simple
Extra touch
To emphasize my affection.

Yes my affection
Will have other outlets
Like kisses and hugs
But the gesture
In question
Can be used
In conjunction.

Does it also
Deserve some contemplation
That idle hands
Do the devil's work?
I would not give
That bastard the satisfaction!
Knowing I have the ability
To take matters
Into my own hands
And idleness be damned!
And since yours would be
Held in mine
We would be a team!
