Primary information

I will be posting, from time to time, stories about my travels around the country as an over the road truck driver. For those who do not know about driving a truck I welcome your inquiries, it will give me an opportunity to provide some insight as well as educate and provide some guidelines to help keep the roads and highways a little safer Not to mention provide me a starting point to ramble on with a story or two

Unlike many years ago, the federal government has imposed much more strict rules for drivers over the past 10-15 years, for obvious reasons. The FMCSR (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations) is a very large book full of rules and regulations about driving a truck, what drivers are allowed to do and what they're NOT allowed to do. There are some drivers out there who choose not to follow some of these rules but for the most part all drivers are compliant and professional.

One thing people may not know is a driver's Hours of Service. A truck driver may only drive a total of 11 hours during a continual 14 hour period. Once a driver does something work related his 14 hour clock starts and when that 14 hours stops he MUST take a 10 hour break....14 hour clock + 10 hour break = 24 hrs. = one day, get it? On TOP of that, there is also a 70 hour clock: a driver may not drive more than 60 hours in 7 days or 70 hours in 8 days. Yes, it's a bit of a task to keep up with it all but if a driver (in the past, before electronic logs) kept his log book current it was fairly easy. With the Qualcomm or other electronic logs these days it's not much of an issue because the device keeps track of everything for the driver.

Some companies, like Werner (the company that employed me), Swift, Covenant, Schneider, Conway and other similarly large operations have their trucks governed for safety reasons as well as fuel consumption. Usually it's anywhere from 60-67 MPH, I know I know, it sucks but what can ya do? Given the aforementioned information I am sure it is much easier to understand now why one truck is passing another and it takes FOREVER!!! In all reality it takes maybe 2-3 minutes and once the one truck is out of the way you can easily zoom past and be on your way.

It looks like this is your first "lesson" about trucks in that drivers are under time constraints and if they do things like take FOREVER to pass another truck it is because they need to. So please have patience and give trucks plenty of room to maneuver, they'll certainly appreciate it

More to come....questions?

Everyone is on a different plane of intelligence. Some people's plane has not taken off yet!!

I did a lot of my driving backwards. Some days, working the city, my commute to work was longer than my delivery route, even by a factor of three or four. I spent my day backing up.

great info. Looking forward to hearing more stories. I am always in awe of the skills when backing a very long trailer into such tight spaces. We have SUCH a hard time backing up our little 23ft camper!!

Oh yes, backing up can be quite a chore. I took pictures of some of the places I had to back in to, not textbook easy by ANY means I might have to share some of those

Definitely a good introduction!!!!!!!
I know several truck drivers, and like in any driver, there are good ones and bad ones, and the one that cheats because greed in more important than the safety of all on the road. I know at least two that keep two book logs, the real one and the dummy one to show when they get stopped by the Law. I'm looking forward to read your own experiences on the road, and what made you stop driving. Have you witness a very serious wreck, where people died in it??

WITHOUT PASSION LIFE IS NOTHING
