Not Just In October

As we all know October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month (we wear Pink). It was publicized here and in the media, NFL officials and players wore pink. It is a very worthy cause. There is another cause equally worthy of recognition and awareness: Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is supposed to be marked by wearing Purple. It does not receive as much attention. In fact it is almost ignored, especially by the NFL. Both should not be limited to just October.

Everyone who reads my posts should know by now that I am a huge professional football fan. And the NFL is really ‘the only game in town’. It is also no big secret I’m NOT fan of the Dallas Cowboys, for various reasons. Now I will publicly add another.

Greg Hardy. He was convicted by a NC court (by a judge) of domestic violence charges including hitting his girlfriend, and threatened her life when he threw her on top of a large pile of guns. On “appeal” (retrial actually) he got away with it because the victim refused to testify a second time. He was suspended from playing most of last year and the team he was with cut him.

During last weeks game he attacked a coach and other players on his team over a play he was not involved in. He went on a violent tirade. This guy is a mass shooting or deceased gf looking for a place to happen. He does not belong in public let alone earning big buck playing in the NFL. Later the Cowboy’s coach said there would be no discipline. After that the owner Jerry Jones referred to this criminal as a “team leader”.

Domestic Violence Awareness should not be limited to just one month. Women I have known and loved have been affected by domestic violence. It hurt them deeply but not just physically, it leaves deep emotional scars. It hurts to hear that someone you love has experienced repeated physical and emotional violence. If you know of someone in that kind of predicament they may not be able to report it. Do it for them if you can. Help them get whatever help they need.

I got caught up in writing my response and spaced on saying that I am sorry about what is happening to your sister and how it effects you.

A woman who I care about very much called me in May and asked me to meet her. She knows I will do whatever I can to help. She told me about the guy she was with and his verbal and emotional abuse. Their marriage was off and he was off his meds – again. I told her my place was available if she needed – she passed. A few weeks later I got an email, a huge argument – off his meds again. Plus he had taken her phone and car keys. I offered to get her a hotel for the night (with or without me). Instead she locked herself in the bedroom and had a .45 under her pillow. He then disappeared for maybe a month. Next I hear anything was late August – she married him. No word from her since.

I've known these women all my life and they can be very hard to help. It isn't that they lack the sense to see the threats- it's that they've been so intimidated, often all their lives, that they live in constant fear and have no experience of being able to trust that the proffered help will actually follow through. The law commonly fails them. What an awful way to live in the land of the free!!
