Age – is it REALLY just a number here?

Age – is it REALLY just a number here?

First, this is not a rant about age – there is a question at the end of this. But to set the stage . . .

I understand people have preferences and that is fine and legit. I have my own, including an age range mostly because I don’t think I would have much in common with someone under 40 or over 70. But those are not ‘cast in stone’ numbers. I did meet a woman from here who was 33 at the time. Not a lot in common to talk about but we did have some fun.

A couple things prompted this post. A woman posted that age is a just number – but “don’t lie about it”. I agree with the age/number part, but the “don’t lie about it” got me thinking. Also, I happen to fall out of what seems to be a fairly common upper age number – either 50 or 55 is on quite a few women’s profiles.

I get it about lying about yourself, but I believe the reality here is many of the real people here (not scammers or other forms of frauds) has something on their profile that is “fudged” so to speak. I would say that for some reasons like ID security (like not posting face pics), lying online about some things is understandable within reasonable limits.

I have seen women’s profiles where their age probably is a lie – not just picking on women with that I just don’t look at men’s profiles. And, that age statement is based on a statistical thing I have noticed during my time here.

So the question is, if age does not really matter – Does “fudging”/lying 2 or 3 years one way or the other really matter?

Your questions, answers or comments (agreeing or disagreeing in a respectful way) are encouraged and welcome.

Update 6/26/15: Interesting diversity of comments. FWIW, the ID security thing is an important part of the equation for me. I have no problem with anyone who fudges a couple years or so. In fact I would be surprised if they did not.

Agreed - lying is wrong in general. But, if it is to protect your ID is that reasonable/acceptable?

A very reasonable way to look at it. Thank you.

I do have an age range, seems some very very young men are interested and they are often such hard work, don't get me, my sense of humor or cultural references, not that I am really meeting a lot of men here. Then there are the much older men. If I want to find a friend over 60, well, I already have one. I already know what that's all about. I have seen more men lying about their age here and that surprised me, a 46 year old who says he is 33 and a 42 year old who says he is 29. Eventually they fess up, so why lie in the first place. I suppose it doesn't really matter, but in general I don't like liars.
46 to 33 and 42 to 29 are huge lies intended to deceive someone. I'm talking more about a couple years to hide a crucial part of an online ID.

I prefer to know, if I'm attracted to someone, age won't matter. I have a range limit, 21 for sex, 30 for conversation. I'm honest about my age, it's not like I'm 56.
Listen to the young grasshoppa chirping . Be he awares that 56 is nipping at his unshod heels?

I myself have no reason to lie about anything in here. If someone is found out, how does that make them look? Would you be able to trust anything else they say or present?

To me, age is just a number, it is all about how you behave in any given situation. Even though I usually behave childish I know when to be an adult and do things properly
If the fudge is for a good reason I can accept that. I have updated the post re my position on "fudging" for ID security purposes.

Really don't think age is really a number but I do love my guys who are older then me. Always been that way. Online why not! younger and older who cares. Now if you post a picture of yourself make sure it does reflect your true age and not one that was taken 20 years ago. Seen that too many times hugssssssssssss V
Thanks Sweet. The misleading pic thing does make for a disappointing experience. I updated the post re my position on "fudging" for ID security purposes.

I think it does matter. I generally take my preferred age range and tack on 5 years at both the top and bottom end of the scale and post that. So really, the ends of my scale are already kind of out of my preferences. I can understand someone with a little white lie online, but when it is time to meet, I would expect them to come clean prior to the actual meeting.

If they don't, then I wonder what else they've lied about... if they lie about the little stuff that doesn't matter so much, why wouldn't they lie about the big stuff that does matter a great deal?
Very good way to look at it. I updated the post re my position on "fudging" for ID security purposes.

I don't see a point in lying about one's age, it'll all come out in the wash anyways.

For what its worth, i have a set age preference on my profile, doesn't do any good though, most people don't read profiles anyways.

I'm 65 and that's the truth !!!!
