Betsy DeVos gets a lesson. Betsy DeVos went to Bethune-Cookman University to give a commencement speech. The plan to have her there was protested pretty strongly by many students, alumni and others including a petition with thousands of signatures. The speech is supposed to be part of Trumps efforts to reach out to historically black colleges and universities. It certainly doesn't help none that DeVos made such a self serving and either ignorant or willfully deceptive statement not that long ago about the HBCU's (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). From the New York Times... The latest controversy began on Monday evening when Ms. DeVos released a statement shortly after meeting with several presidents of historically black colleges and universities. In it, Ms. DeVos began by praising the schools for making “tangible, structural reforms” that allowed students, often underserved, to reach their full potential. “They started from the fact that there were too many students in America who did not have equal access to education,” she said in the statement. “They saw that the system wasn’t working, that there was an absence of opportunity, so they took it upon themselves to provide the solution.” Historically black colleges and universities “are real pioneers when it comes to school choice,” the statement continued. “They are living proof that when more options are provided to students, they are afforded greater access and greater quality. Their success has shown that more options help students flourish.” End quote. DeVos ignored or maybe she just doesn't have the education to know the real reasons the HBCU's were created. They were started back before 1964, you know, when there was segregation, when black students weren't allowed to go to the regular schools, colleges and universities. Or maybe it is just some more "alternate facts" delivered by the Trump administration with the intent to further the school voucher program. The students protested by turning their backs on her during her speech and booing her. I think it was very appropriate. I think it was insulting to the students to even have her there in the first place. I don't think the school president should be fired but should certainly be informed of the idiocy of having her there and maybe have some sensitivity or should we say common sense counseling.  I think it is entirely inappropriate for Trump to be trying to win the votes of these folks by putting this idiot up in front of them at their graduation. Vive La Difference |

The students there really made my day. What a bonehead move to invite DeVos as a speaker. The DeVos family is of the opinion that wealthy Americans should not have to pay for any public education for minorities they don't want to hire or live next door to. They're also terrified that some poor kid might eat a bowl of oatmeal on their dime. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

so 1man4fun69, it is ok for white students or college students to protest, boo, and turn their back on a speaker? but black students can't because a white person's beliefs about a black person will be confirmed and reinforce? I hope I am reading your comment wrong, anyway Tickles4us she will never understand nor will he, election year is coming up, Trump know it and with some losing their seats and new faces with new and better ideas coming in, and not a Trump asslicker, he is trying all to get votes for those seats, YOU CAN'T HELP OR STOP STUPID

for a woman who is devoid of any true knowledge about education, the HBCU, or much else I assume she got into the car and cursed out the students, not understanding the intent of their scorn. You cannot conceive the many without the one.

That woman got her job for favors rendered. She has no qualifications at all for that job. We can't expect too much from her. . She's clueless.

I find it hard to take her words at face-value when she says she wants to have a respectful, meaningful dialog with those who oppose her, when she doesn't seem to even have a grasp as to WHY they oppose her.
