For what it's worth, as a more than middle aged, middle-ish class, privileged white man, I am thoroughly ashamed of the behaviours of my kind, we of the white-ish skin pigment. It disgusts me

I can't even begin to feel the hurt, the pain that you go through, have gone through, every fucking day of your life, just because you're of the darker skin pigment.

Racism has no place in my heart. I'm sure there are countless explanations for racism, but the bottom line is that there is no excuse for it. None!

There are some vile pigs here, and there are vile pigs in real life. I have and will continue to speak up about it any time I encounter it.

And if I've said anything wrong here, not hit the mark just so, or missed the point completely, put me right, make me feel like shit for it, because my moment of discomfort there will not even scratch the surface of your lives under racism. I aspire to be able to learn and to do more to make a difference if I can, so if there is anything I can do better, please let me know.

And, this is a wonderful post, thank you McBiggles.

Well said hun I agree with you I absolutely hate what is happening today. I was watching what happened to George Floyd. It was wrong and I am so glad that all the policeman are now being charged. They should all get what George got in my book, especially the officer putting his knee on his neck!!

You know Al Sharpton said it best yesterday, its time that they got their knees off our necks!! You know I found this and I want to share it with you because there is no place in this world for racism!!!

I hope you can have a fun filled Friday hun..

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

A post entitled "You're Not Welcome Here" is not exactly very welcoming, but I trusted you and read on anyway. I get your point, but you're right I haven't experienced this first hand.

The protests around here have been MOSTLY peaceful, but as always it seems some bad actors engage in actions that tarnish the efforts of the peaceful ones to be heard.

Knock, Knock, can I come in? I promise I will behave. Not many people here on these sites have seen as much as I have , I remember when there were NO shared facilities. in fact the county next to me outlawed people of color from living there. The integration of schools, colleges, are all still easy to remember. It is a shame that we have had this divide. There is no real reason for it!

Good job, most likely needed here as well as many other places, Hope you are still not working 7 days..be safe, be healthy..

Like you, I too like to keep things apolitical, even on issues such as this that has direct impact on me and my family. In fact, it is extremely difficult for me to withhold myself.

I'll share this, though, and hope it is still politically neutral enough while still adding something of value to the discussion. I can't get the original source, so I'm ad-libbing the parts I don't quite remember, so hear goes...

Humanity is binary. You either have it or you don't. There is no in-between. It is not a spectrum. It's everyone or no one.

Whatever virtue allows you to have respect and compassion for one group, but the ability to withhold it for another … whatever that is, it isn't humanity. It's something else. Another word would be needed to describe it.

No one wants to hear "You're better than me." Those are fighting words. It only serves to provoke a violent response. Yet ALL of us are delighted to hear "I'm better than you," without ever recognizing those two statements are exactly the same. The only thing different is who is saying it to whom.

We lament that there isn't enough humanity in the world. Yet the very things preventing us from having it are considered virtues. Patriotism. Nationalism. Income. Education. Etc. These are all things we use to divide us, to make us feel superior than the Other.

As the author Michael Connelly writes in his novels, "Either everyone counts or no one counts." I believe those words.

I can't say that I've had the same experiences as you because of the color of my skin. I'm just a old white guy that has been judged by where I grew up. I don't judge anyone by anything more than their actions. If you act like an asshole than it doesn't matter what your skin color is because that doesn't control your actions. I've worked in law enforcement and have dealt with what a lot of people call the underbelly of society. The only group you can label all together as worthless are career politicians. Even with all the protests that are going on, the peaceful protesters who are truly trying to get a message across are not being heard over the rioters and looters that think destruction is the way to go. Unfortunately the media, whether they be right wing or left wing, is trying to slant things towards their bias instead of just truly reporting the news straight across the board. But that is just my thinking also and I could be wrong. I have been before and I will be again.

Great post La!! I soooooo hope that this uprising works this time and he didnt die in vain. There is a groundswell of activisim re emerging and this time its young white folks included in the mix. I hope their strength and enthusiasm stays focused as those allies are listened to differently. I have told them all to listen to what the Prez Barack said to them in his graduation remarks to, ' set the world on a different path, as the old ways arent working" . I hesitate being too optimistic, but it just feels different this time. ~🙏

Well said Lala. I agree with everyone's comments.

I was married to a black man and have 4 bi-racial children but I can't even begin to imagine what it feels like to be judged solely on the color of my skin. Or to know that when my loved ones leaves the house for ANY reason, there's a chance they MIGHT not come back.

I am blessed that my mom was born and raised as a Quaker, (some of the the first Abolitionists) and raised us following their values. I may not be a religious person but I try to live my life without causing pain to others. You shall reap what you sow.

George Floyd sacrificed his life for the changes that need to be made. I think this is a huge turning point for America. IT HAS TO BE!

One positive thing that has come from this is we all can truly see what kind of dictator is in charge of our country. He is trying to bring democracy to its knees and that is scary as shit.

WE CANNOT LET HIM DO THAT!

It is so important that we all step up and use the one legal tool that we have. The one that maybe half the people have used in the past several elections. The one that people died for the right to do: Voting. VOTE his ass and his kind out of office. These days not nearly enough people have done it. THAT'S how he got in office to begin with. He is an actor pretending to be president. A celebrity president with absolutely no experience, who’s doing his best to take away our hard fought democracy.

Let him prohibit mail in elections. I will put on my mask and stand in line. He can't stop us from voting in person.

We HAVE the power and need to use the same tactic Bill Clinton did for his campaign and GET OUT THE VOTE!

IF I was religious, I would say the coronavirus and George Floyd is God’s way of showing us how dangerous trump is and telling us ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. HE’S GOT TO GO!

Biden ain’t all that but he’s the lesser of the two evils.

I sucks that someone has to post this on a site that is supposed ti bring people together. And, of course it sucks that the situations we are living through exist at all.

For me, calling out racism/phobic actions is like the old homeland security saying or wherever it came from: "if you see something, say something." Be it someone else's speech or behavior... or, sadly sometimes, my own.

One late evening, I was driving through a wealthy part of town, blasting hip hop on my car radio, and wearing a hat. I rolled through a stop sign and got pulled over.

The cop approached my window, posturing tall. Tense. When they saw the face of a young white lady, everything changed. The cop’s body language slumped forward, relaxed. There were chuckles and jokes. I was sent on my way with, “try to observe traffic laws next time!”

I think about that often. I think about how different it would be for a different driver.

I do worry about bubbles though. I’ve been happy to block certain folks here, and you’re 100% entitled to set your own boundaries. Nobody has time for that garbage. But it does surprise me when I realize how many people are just kind of horrible — a significant voting bloc — and how little thought I’d given to their presence before it became such a big problem.

Internet bubbles are’t a problem you should have worry about solving, but it’s a hell of a problem.

Triple R,
It's nice to see you.
Saying "All people matter" in this moment in time is like this:
Your house is on fire.
You call the fire department and they come to your street.
You say My house is on fire and it matters (for you to save it) and then all your neighbors come outside of their homes and say, "Our houses matter, too!"
Do ya get it now?
Black people, and specifically Black men are treated so much differently than anyone else; the assumption is that they're more violent, less intelligent, can handle more violence on their person and survive it (which has happened publicly like George Floyd and Eric Garner, NYC). NO ONE should be brutalized by the police, but too many police have brutalized Black people on video now, for us to look away at it.

When Black lives matter, all lives will matter.
There, I gave you better words to use for the future, if you like.

Lala,
Great post.
I've been going to the protests here in San Diego, with my totally white-looking daughter, who is more on fire than I am (and I've been writing about politics and racism for the past 20+ years elsewhere, not on Senior Sizzle).

I used to be dispirited about what was happening with my kids. I heard "We passed laws against that or this, so why are there still protests? Why are you still upset by it? It's illegal!"

Patiently, I would explain, yes, it's illegal to discriminate on the basis of your skin color, your sexual preference, your gender, and so on. But just because it's illegal doesn't mean it doesn't keep happening. For real change to happen, we have to hold ourselves accountable and be willing to be uncomfortable so that ALL will be equally treated in our society, not just 1% of one color of skin.

One kid still identifies as a conservative but at least now, he's more centrist. The other one is practically Left of LEFT! hA! I guess that teaches me, right?

Know justice, Know peace,
No justice, no peace,

To be frank I’m less than thrilled to see you. Our past interactions, specifically summer 2016, were not pleasant. So, for me, you have little credibility.

Re: the whose lives matter. Definition of Racist: “showing or feeling discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or believing that a particular race is superior to another.” Per Webster’s

Saying only Black lives leaves out Latin lives, Native American lives, Muslim lives and non-Black women (and on and on) who also face discrimination and brutality from police and other “authorities”. Leaving them out discriminates against them – discrimination is racist.

I’ve read where the rapper Ice-T, has spoken out for BLM, has said he does not apply what you have indicated to anyone other than black people. Do I believe him or you? That is a rhetorical question.

Definition of All: “used to refer to the whole quantity or extent of a particular group or thing.” – Also per Webster’s. I say ALL lives matter because that is exactly what I believe – and in ALL moments in time.

The definitions I referenced have the same meaning in this moment in time as they do in ALL moments (past, present, future) in time. When people try to run a con on other people they twist the meaning of words – the best example of that is mr. trump.

There, I gave you the actual meaning of words to use for the future.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

Well said LaLa. I know I'm glad to see the attention the movement is getting around the world and especially here in this country. The attention being given to the police departments and their budgets is a good indication of the level of concern the people are feeling. The movement to ban the choke holds across the country and to require the other police officers on site to step up and say or do something instead of just watching is a good thing. It's long past time the police started policing their ranks and getting rid of the problem officers, they certainly have had enough chances to get their shit strait. I know I didn't used to use the banned feature much on my blog for a long while but recently I've been using it for the really obnoxious asses and the really stupid fuck's. But I tend to attract them with some of the posts I do, lol. Rasism stinks and it definitely doesn't belong here on your blog or on anyone else's.
