What's my age again?

What's my age again?

'The beautiful and the innocent have no enemy but time' - William Butler Yeats

Recently the BBC's website marked David Beckham's 40th birthday by flagging up something that mere mortals have often noticed but has not been remarked upon - he looks older, much older than he really is. I console myself that this rich and successful international footballer is in fact haggard and has a stupid helium voice, in contrast to my pasty smooth face and Pete Tong baritone (the world famous dance DJ comes from the slightly posher village a mile away from mine). Just for fun, the BBC mentioned a 'guess my age' website recently created by Microsoft where it had uploaded a few pics of the famous ball bender, some dated Beckham in his late 70s.

David - no amount of filters and Photoshopping can disguise the fact he is older than me and always will be

So I put one of my more flattering pics into the age calculator, it came back with 33. I guess all those years of not smoking, not taking Class A drugs and sleeping late at weekends are finally paying off. Some people are lucky enough to have the right hormones to inhibit wrinkles and a spare tyre into middle age but by the time you get to my age lifestyle will have played a big part in how you look, if I was anything like certain people I know I'd have been drinking heavily for over 20 years by now.

In some ways online dating sites delay the normal aging process - really good looking women bemoan the comeuppance of no longer turning heads in the street. You had it - when it goes it takes a lot of botox and other cosmetic surgery to get it back. On sites like this however, there is a cougar culture where women in their late 40s/early 50s discover they have a band of male secret admirers in their 20s. I say secret as these guys won't admit to liking women old enough to be their mum to their friends, but that desire does exist. I guess this has been pretty liberating/empowering to certain women has they're not merely the recipient of a lot of attention but it's the first time that anyone new has expressed passion and desire for them for a loonnnnggggg time.

There is a limit to this of course - this remains a Darwinian environment so a really pretty girl who is 21 will trump one who is 46 but looks great for her age. This was something that was very hard to accept for an associate of mine on here who used to go by the name of SaucyCindy. She was in her late 40s, an ex-lapdancer. As an adult entertainer she made her money by being slightly sexier than all of her colleagues in Spearmint Rhino, she retained that competitive instinct when it came to the online world, so much so that she didn't want a few men to lust after her, when she came into a room she wanted ALL the men to watch her and stop looking at the other girls. She was given to badmouthing her competition, she once pointed out that another popular girl was only 21 so her good looks 'counted for nothing'. I had to break it to her - guys don't see it that way! You can be 21 and look like Kathy Burke or Susan Boyle, so it's definitely not a non-achievement to be stunningly beautiful at that age, it's just more likely you'll be near your peak. There's a window of opportunity - a door opens . . . a door closes. Get it while you're hot.

Lisa Ann - model and beauty salon owner - it takes a lot of effort to stay in the game when you're as old as me late

Hmmm, I'm not in either category I'm not in my 20s anymore, and I'm not quite old enough to be a cougar.

I've seen women like Cindy in chat before. It ain't pretty

Actually, if they would just accept their age and appearance they'd be far more attractive to men, instead of bitching about younger women. There will always be younger and more attractive women around - that's life.

I accept my age and intend to grow old naturally, and, of course, disgracefully No botox or plastic surgery for me. I'm too scared of needles and I'm not that dumb!

David has a thin face, so he was never going to make growing older look good. The body, yes, the face, no, probably not without a little help along the way.

I think the woman who is confident, and comfortable in her own skin is attractive, irrespective of age. We are, after all, all getting older...if we're very lucky

I do remember Cindy mentioning this 21 year old to me, unprompted - I had no interest in the young girl because she is vain and self-obsessed, but I could see why other guys would drool over her. When Cindy tried to make out that guys should discount her good looks because she was 'only 21' I thought 'You are joking, that's totally not how guys think' We are all affected by the ravages of time and there's no point denying it - Paula Radcliffe, who is the same age as me, just ran her farewell marathon - her time was good enough to qualify for the Rio Olympics but unsurprisingly she didn't beat her own World Record set 10 years ago. Cindy really bears the Yeats quote out as she traded on her looks for years, now she's not young anymore and it bothers her, she doesn't turn heads quite like she used to. Boohoo!

I like to think I look good for my age . . . I know I'm too old for the true 'cougars' who are chasing after 'cubs' who 15 - 20 years younger than themselves. But it doesn't matter. I'm comfortable enough in my own skin to realise there are guys in their 20s who women lust after who look very different from me.

Amen to growing old disgracefully - if you ever need further corruption you know where to come
