Gracie Gets a Dog

We invited an immigrant into our home. Sometimes when couples split up there are casualties, orphans. PD brought one home Saturday after helping out in a move to a new apartment. She called me from South Bend and asked if it was OK with me to bring Marco home. I like the little and we both worried about what might happen to him if we didn't adopt him. He got here about six forty five and he's made himself right at home. He and Gracie hit it off from the start. She has the patience of a hundred and ten pound saint and he's a five pound pervert. He gets very excited and anxious and tries humping everything in sight, but all that got transferred to poor Gracie. She's been very tolerant of him, if at first a bit confused.

I think he needs to set his sights a little lower. Gracie's a lot of female for him to handle. I do believe he thinks he's died and gone to heaven. It's said that once you go black you'll never go back, so we'll see if he can get past this. He's not much bigger than a dildo, and he has been acting a little like one. He takes rejection well, but he comes right back for more later- in case she changes her mind. I've heard women on this site gripe about similar behavior.

Now they're playing and chasing each other around the house. He follows her around both inside and out- Gracie's the only I know who has her own dog. After a short time outdoors he went right through the fence. My fence is a cattle fence- I built it for a Malemute, so it isn't squirrel proof. I was hoping he'd stay right by Gracie's side and respect the boundaries but he failed that test miserably and went on the lam straight away. So now he's on a leash, in protective custody, when he goes out.

He doesn't lack for spine- he defends his treats and makes a lot of noise doing it. Gracie didn't waste much time stealing them so he had to take a hard line with her about that, and issued a strongly worded statement. She's cool with that. Rather than force the issue, she's very nonchalant and the minute he isn't looking she just takes it anyway. PD bought him a little squeaky ball and she took that too. She was very pleasant about it, but in her view possession is nine tenths of the law, and size matters.

We've been correcting him for humping, and as he gets more comfortable he's settling down. He's very well behaved and obeys easily. We had thought we might try to find him a new home but PD is already getting very fond of Marco so I think I can see how this is going to turn out. Before we can try him in the forest he has to get some medication for ticks and parasites, and I suppose he'll have to learn to ride in a shoulder bag. I'm not sure he can do three miles and he might have to be carried. He's funny to watch- he darts around like a little water spider and only his head and tail stick up out of the myrtle.

It looks like Marco is here to stay.

Marco sounds fantastic, and Marco and Gracie's relationship will be fascinating to follow. I don't know much about dogs but I'm of the view if their relationship starts well it'll only grow. Your home sounds great now!

I'm not a fan of lap dogs, but I like all dogs, and the little guy grows on you. It's kind of nice for Gracie to have a buddy, even if he is a little Pepi Le Pew.

Marco is adorable, even if he is only as big as the tv remote.

I guess he's Italian too, with a name like Marco and has big cojones, no wonder he is horny.

Or maybe he has no cojones.
He doesn't even have little cojones! And Gracie is spayed. This ought to be the safest sex any two animals ever had, especially since neither one of them knows what the hell they're doing. They could easily be members of this site, honey!

Well, thanks. I'm fond of dogs and I hate to see an animal get shuffled around. They like routine and they need attention. My wife alone will see that he gets plenty of love.

He IS persistent! But he minds well and I think if we can make him feel secure maybe we can get him to express his desire more appropriately! You know, chase a rabbit together, share a bone. Well....maybe the bone sharing will come later.

You got that right! I spent an hour trying to get a picture of Gracie and Marco together. He spends a lot of time sleeping, like all dogs, but when he's up he's on the move! It's really funny to see them walking together- she's a gentle giant and he buzzes around like a water bug.

I was interested that you pegged him as a toy fox terrier. They look remarkably similar. When my son in law got him they insisted he's a runt rat terrier, but I suspected a chihuahua mix, because of his size. Both you and I know how breeders can be- a lot like used car salesmen.

Whatever he is, Gracie and PD like him, and so do I. He's fitting in pretty well.

Love happy adoptive dog stories! Nothing better than bringing two opposites together. They will be buds and you have an extra snuggle buddy. PD did the right thing by bringing Marco into your little circle. I am a HUGE animal lover and believer in adopting shelter dogs. Thank you for not making Marco one of those.

I did think of that. I could get her a backpack. She's kind of a wild thing in the woods though. It might be kind of a rough ride for him. He'd need a helmet and goggles, and maybe a taser.

He's already at home. They have to eat together and pee and poop together. He takes fifteen steps to keep up with her one. I can't wait to take him to the forest.

Years ago we took in a wild Jack Russell....he was crazy. We already had the quietest best behaved Basset Hound you could ever have. Well she put manners on the little fella...she could hold him prisoner with one of her paws....they had a great life together once she had taught him she was BOSS!!!

Does he have his papers... we wouldn't want INS busting down the door in the middle of the night. Though that probably wouldn't stop them.

M Grandmother had a similar dog back in the early eighties when I was in OK. He would always go ape shit, barking like mad when ever someone came to the door including when people were coming home. One cold winter day I was wearing an old Air Force parka with the hood up and when I opened the door he was there going crazy, so I leaned down a bit and barked loudly back at him. He spun around started moving his legs but not yet getting traction was just scratching his toenails on the floor and yipping and trying like hell to beat feet for somewhere far away. When he did get traction he left a trail of piss the whole way across the living room floor as he disappeared down the hall yipping all the way. After that he stayed by the hall when he barked at the door for a long while not daring to go to the door when someone came. I guess I traumatized the poor little guy. But he wasn't a bad dog though I'm more a bigger dog kind of person.

Normaly I dont like dogs that look like cats or rats. I am a shepherd fan. So we got one for my son. Then came a Maltesepoodle rescue. Big dog 145 lbs. small one 12 lbs. Wife and daughter went gaga over it. Gave it a small dog complex. Like you my dog has a dog for the past 4 years. He acts so tough and barks up a storm. A slight noise and he runs back to us or behind the big dog.

My kids are involved in dog rescue, foster and training. We have 2 dogs and 2 cats. It is a miracle that we don't have a few dozen animals. By the time we train the rescues we don't want to let them go. They grow on you in no time. Love the pictures.

Great post! He's a cutie; love those pics. Be sure and let us know how he gets on in the forest. I'm visualizing him in a pack on Gracie's back with his little head poking out! So fun. Thanks!

Gracie's pretty laid back. She gets excited to meet other dogs but she isn't the least bit aggressive. I have an idea he may change that!

The site ate my photos as I posted them...again. It took a few minutes to get them to stick. I favor big dogs...how's that go...? "I like big mutts and I cannot lie!" I can't get over how tiny and fragile he is. When Gracie and I play we play rough- she bites hell out of me and I sock her pretty hard. I have to be really careful with this midget!
