Chat etiquette
Chat etiquette Hi, I am wondering if there is an etiquette to be followed when using the instant messenger. For example, is it considered poor manners to send an IM to someone without first sending them a standard message first? |

Also, don't hammer someone with requests. If you don't get a reply, just move on. Women that I know that still IM here have told be they get more men paging them than they can deal with even if just sending an "I'm busy" or some other message, to be polite as one might in the real world. Fortunately and unfortunately, this is not the real world. It can be frustrating at times but patience and perseverance are the key although if both are aimed at one particular person, they can become a locked deadbolt. Although there is no "rule" that one send a message first, starting a conversation with a message or three will make it more likely someone you are requesting to IM with will recognize you and so accept the IM request. And, if you don't get a reply to a message, it is very doubtful you'll get a request to IM with that person accepted.
