A Slut - To Be or Not To Be
A Slut - To Be or Not To Be I recently read a sex-positive caption that defined the term 'slut' as being, "A person of ANY gender who has the courage lead life according the radical proposition that sex is nice, and pleasure is good for you." I like this definition, and it inspired me share my thoughts here. Why is 'slut' normally such a shameful term? The status quo is quite ridiculous. One popular definition helps highlight the hypocrisy, "A slut is a woman with the morals of a man." That's it, right there... a double standard. Men who act on slutty impulses, they're positively looked upon as STUDly! Women who act on slutty impulses, they're negatively shamed as SLUTs. OH, the dichotomy of it all! 'Slut' has been a weaponized term for use by the ignorant norms of society, who wish to unreasonably hold women up to an entirely different standand than men, sexually. It really is a calling card of the ignorant, the small minded, and the sexist. To be fair, what about women enjoying casual sex is less moral than men doing the same? Nada. And who is it that these men are cooly enjoying their casual sex with? Women, of course! If there weren't women who enjoyed casual sex, these men would be shit out of luck! Why not appreciate the hand that feeds you?!? And for those jerks who prefer to coerce, manipulate or trick more naive or conservative-minded women into sex - those men are simply the scum of the earth. Now, not all slutty behavior is positive. There are those who who engage in casual sex because of low self esteem, self-loathing, an act of rebellion, and/or a desire to hurt themselves. In this case... why try to kick a person when they're down?! They need to be shown some acceptance, and ideally, a path to finding self-love. But for those women who confidently enjoy casual sex for all the right reasons, whether discreetly or freely - respect! 'Slut' doesn't have to be a negative term. Among those more accepting and supportive, it can be turned on end into a term of endearment! And there's another term I discovered before writing this - that is, "Trophy Slut". How cool is that! It's a perfect example of positive reappropriation of a commonly negative term. Personally, I quite fancy sluts - I genuinely DO appreciate and respect their "courage" to explore casual sex in the pursuit of pleasure. In that respect, I might put them on a bit of a pedestal... and, yes, maybe even consider someone a 'trophy slut', if I'm lucky enough to find myself building a relationship with one such liberated woman. And in that case, lucky me! |
