*** I Pledge Allegiance

I was pleasantly surprised yesterday when my 10 year old Godson came home from school. He wanted me to sit and listen to something on the internet that they had been introduced (the explanation) to in school by one of his teachers . I thought it was cute as he sat me down and brought this up on his iPad and made sure that I listened closely to it. I listened and was very pleased by this explanation of The Pledge of Allegiance, that made its meaning much clearer to him and his classmates. He then had me and his brother join him in reciting the Pledge. When his parents got home from school, he said he would do the same with them. This may not be significant to folks from other countries, but I would think you have a similar pledge / saying for your country. I am so happy that the school has stepped up and shared this with the . Is there something similar in your country? Here is a transcript of…………….

The Pledge of Allegiance
by Red Skelton
January 14, 1969
(note the date)

“When I was a small boy in Vincennes, Indiana, I heard, I think, one of the most outstanding speeches I ever heard in my life. I think it compares with the Sermon on the Mount, Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, and Socrates’ Speech to the Students.
We had just finished reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and he called us all together, and he says, “Uh, boys and girls, I have been listening to you recite the Pledge of Allegiance all semester, and it seems that it has become monotonous to you. Or, could it be, you do not understand the meaning of each word? If I may, I would like to recite the pledge, and give you a definition for each word”:

Me ………… an individual; a committee of one.

Pledge ….. Dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self-pity.

Allegiance …. My love and my devotion.

To the Flag … Our standard. “Old Glory”; a symbol of courage. And wherever she waves, there is respect, because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts “Freedom is everybody's job”.

of the United …. That means that we have all come together.

States ……. Individual communities that have united into forty-eight great states. Forty-eight individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose. All divided by imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common cause, and that’s love of country, of America.

And to the Republic …. A Republic: a sovereign state in which power is invested into the representatives chosen by the people to govern. And the government is the people; and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.

For which it stands One Nation ... Meaning so blessed by God.
Indivisible …. Incapable of being divided.

With Liberty …. Which is Freedom. The right of power for one to live his own life without fears, threats, or any sort of retaliation.

And Justice … The principle and qualities of dealing fairly with others.

For All For All. That means, boys and girls, it's as much your country as it is mine.”

Now let me hear you recite the Pledge of Allegiance:

I pledge allegiance
to the Flag of the United States of America,
and to the Republic, for which it stands;
one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

He ended with ,,,,, “Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our country, and two words have been added to the Pledge of Allegiance: Under God. Wouldn't it be a pity if someone said that it is a prayer, and that it be eliminated from our schools, too?”

No matter your country of origin, instilling and maintaining the pride of your country with your is so important

I like what the teacher did. So many times our history is lost in school

I concur....I recited the Pledge of Allegiance when I was a youth....and I don't think it was detrimental to me....in fact it made me more prideful for my country!

Here we don't have a pledge, though people wanting UK citizenship have to pass a citizenship test. They've found that most UK people born here wouldn't pass the test!

I would like history to be continued to be taught in school. But it is being distorted in some states' textbooks. The US has not treated its people very well and I wonder if that should be taught. I remember 4th grade and learning my State of NH;s history. I remember it because we made these plaster cast like things in the shape of our state and painting it green. I don't remember much else except that. How come that stands out and not the history itself? LOL Should it be interactive? I am a big proponent of field trips for educational reasons. I know with dwindling school budgets stuff like that is cut out. But there are some great places kids can learn from. Heck, I am not a teacher. Heck I don't even have kids. But I just remember being one of them. Heck I will say it. I don't want to grow up, I am a Toy's R Us kid. So, my gist is that kids need to be taught history but they should not have it white washed or distorted. Shame on how we, the US, have treated certain people's needs to be known. How are kids going to know about that? I mean did we learn about how awful white settlers were to Indians? Let alone how black people and women were treated. What should be taught is how such groups had to fight for their rights, for equality...
I disagree with most of what you posted. But thank you for taking the time to post

I always loved Red Skelton and his love of country, patriotism. I remember when he explained the meaning of each phrase. he literally had a tear running down his face each time he ended his show with his allegiance to country and God

I think it should be in schools. If a few words can turn you from your religion you are not as devoted as you belive. People who know where they stand are not scared by others with xifferent views.

I agree. Staying with the fundamentals will not be adverse to anyone, of faith or not of faith
