Two beers in again
Two beers in again Two beers in again. Its a friday night. The rain started again, this time with a vengence and I forgot my umbrella. I've been wandering from coffee shop to pub since getting off the bus five blocks ago. I'm making my way to the water and hope to end my little journey today with a belly full of beer and hoefully some donated gift cards in my hands. My last stop grants me my wishes where I get myself an ugly sweater and speak to the manager. After recognizing him at the door and spieling my spiel, he follows me to the bar and hands me an envelope with the prize. Its a new sememster and I upped my course load with one more course. I don't know if I mentioned it here or not yet but at the beginning of the year I signed up in a volunteer peer counsellor program. Mostly it has to do with the international students that are on campus. We put on events and host booths throughout the year for them to recognize us. Hopefully when they have trouble of some sort and need to talk, there's people like me around to lend a listening ear. The gift cards I've been hunting are for an event coming up. I remember being in a foreign country away from things familiar. At first its exciting, but as the regularity of day to day life sets in, the isolation does its darndest to creep in and threatens to take over. Knowing nobody, cut off from support systems and feeling like a fish out of water existence gets bleak quickly. Especially if you have the pressure on to do well in school with an overful workload. I volunteered to hit the pavement and scour the land for the gift cards. Just like any student they are on a budget and a night out can be a big decision. Besides you never know where to go, you never know where is inviting, where is hospitable. Gift cards to local, charismatic holes-in-the wall is a good cure for the international student blues. There is altruism at the heart of this mission however there is also an underlying motive. I signed up for this volunteer peer thing because I knew I could do it, but also because I get a stamp on my transcript at the end of it. All I have to do is put in the required volunteer hours with my training and I'm golden. By pounding pavement in the rain visiting coffee shops and pubs, I get to drink beer, meet some people and fulfill some of those required hours! Everyone wins and has a good time. Yay For college! |
