The 2012 Penn Relays

It's Penn Relays time again. A gathering of some of the best young athletes and Olympic hopefuls from the U.S. and around the world. And once again the emotions are mixed. Do you know that feeling when you want to do something because you know it's going to be fun? But you know you don't want to do it because it's going to be hell?

That's what I'm feeling. Saturday afternoon for me is the real excitement; the races themselves; my schools dominating; meeting old friends that I haven't seen in a long time, years sometimes. Then there's also the food, stuffing yourself; and the clubbing and beers afterwards.

The part that makes me not want to go is the long drives (which, under normal circumstances, I love) going without any real sleep (for the weekend), back pain, leg pain; then having to drive with a bunch of people that we're meeting up with (I'm a control freak so I'm never comfortable or relaxed with someone else driving), then having to stay in the same spot for a good portion of the afternoon, living on junk-food (mostly).

Then when the major portion of the excitement is all over we'll probably have to hang around pretending to have fun until everyone is agreed on departing for home. Then there's another long drive, worrying about the driver staying in control, sleeping over for the night; then that long drive home on Sunday morning.

Some will wonder if it's that bad, why bother to go? Well, this is an Olympic year and, for me, maybe the last time to see some of the Olympic stars perform live before heading off for some serious tune-up for the Olympics. I haven't forgotten what it was like down in Randall Island Stadium, N.Y. that first time Usain Bolt broke the 100 meters world record.

On the drive home I'll probably look back on the weekend's activities and realize that, despite all that, I really had fun and I'm glad I went.

Of course, Monday morning is another head-ache. But I guess I'll deal with that then!!
