Some dogs just have a high hunting instinct. I had a Husky that killed rabbits, squirrels, possums and even snatched birds out the air. It bothered my until the day she killed a rat. After that, she had permission to keep my yard rodent-free!

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

circle of life, circle of life. all living things are born, live, and die. it's inevitable.

my neighbor's dog killed a rabbit. he had the rabbit in his mouth, not so much mauling it to death but shaking and chomping. you could hear the rabbit screaming. my neighbor couldn't get the dog to let go. it was pointless really because the rabbit was already gone. i know it scared the shit outta her though. needless to say, she didn't keep the dog.

perhaps your dog didn't like another animal being in his space
perhaps you dog felt the need to protect you. or perhaps your dog just wanted to show off his hunting skills. y'know, the way cats bring home dead animals as a way to show they love their owner(s). at least you know what your doggie is capable of.

The circle of life /survival of the fittest. Can't really blame the dog for what is encoded in their DNA.

My old dog still prays on young bunnies whose mother was stupid enough to hatch them in the fenced part of our yard.

Unfortunately, dogs instincts can be high. We had a hunting dog who killed two cats over the years. That was awful.

Goodness! A disturbing experience for you for sure, but dogs ultimately, domestic or otherwise, have an animal's instinct.

Thoughts from the Garden...

Yup, I think it's just instinct sadly. My dog got hold of a neighborhood feral cat a year or so ago... it's not fun dealing with the aftermath!

Hopefully, it'll be a rare occurrence and the rabbits will stay clear?

Well, if your neighborhood is anything like mine, your neighbors are probably happy to have one less rabbit around. They are the bane of anyone who likes gardening!

But yeah, not at all fun to have to deal with the remains.

One of the 2 dogs I dogsit is a squirrel killer, and I have to keep a tight leash on her when I take her for walks, The other is a little Napoleon, he challenges every other dog he meets, even tho 95% of them are 10 times his size. Surprisingly tho, both do just fine with my 2 cats in the apt.

a lot of what he is displaying is instinct

I have a terrier... every hole he passes he puts his head into, it is in their DNA

it's the wolf in him.
