Death and the meaning of life

I have noticed some of my blog posts are haunted by thoughts about death. I do not mean to be morbid. Perhaps because I am no longer twenty, such thoughts creep into my mind to remind me of time's winged chariot and that I do not have all the time in the world left to enjoy its flavors.

Humans appear to be the only animals that contemplate the meaning of life and mull over the future inevitability of each human's mortality.

Thanks to human ability to conceptualize, plan and articulate the consequences of actions we can execute grand designs like skyscrapers, wars, moon landings, cruise ships, computers, the internet and Hoover dam.

Perhaps the evanescence of our individual lives gives us reason to value them. If we were each individually immortal we would have an infinite amount of time to waste on each trivial item. Knowing we have only a little time for each of us, we should value the scarce time we have on this planet and not squander our time.

Perhaps death adds meaning to life. I hope so.
