plane flying into a skyscraper

After Sept. 11, 2001 many uninformed people said no one could imagine a plane colliding with a building and that causing a structure to fail. Not true.

In the Eighties I worked in a downtown LA law office and got the task of being a junior fire marshal. Which came with a binder of fire risks. The most serious danger was a large plane striking the building by accident in a fog. They did not anticipate a deliberate terrorist attack. But the danger was understood that jet fuel could cause a severe fire leading to the weakening of the steel beams and the collapse of the entire building in a pancake failure.

Of course in WWII kamikaze flew planes into ships and sank a number of ships by human guided planes. We now have cruise missiles and drones do that.

So the failure of imagination was only partial, not complete. Sadly almost 3,000 died due to a lapse in understanding and combatting the national security threat. Could it happen again? The threat remains. I hope we are better able to understand the problem and prevent another disaster in the future. We need to be vigilant and imagine what could occur.
