Giving up on sex

I know a number of people in the fifty to sixty year old range who have given up on sex.

Apparently there are also even younger ones who decide it is not worth the effort.

I find myself in the strange position of being an advocate for pleasure. You would think that sex hardly needs a pr campaign. But it does. Some are scared away by worries about STDs and others by the thought of unwanted pregnancy. Real problems but not insurmontable obstacles. What gives?

Sex is supposed to be a happy release from the ravages of life. How come so many have tossed in the towel?

Modern life seems to push empty fun with no satisfying substance. People are too busy, yet too bored to commit to anyone in particular. People seem to be so shallow they want the big one but not satisfied with the rest of the package.

Health problems also seem to be a drawback. An aging population is facing the complications of menopause, cancer treatment and diabetes, which harm human sexual response. Painful intercourse is discouraging. There is no wonder pill for a dry and painful vagina. Many medications have harmful side effects that hurt sexual performance.

Porn also creates problems. The lure of the young cheap thrill online is hard to beat with the cold reality of the available pool of willing participants in reality. No wonder online sex is growing while actual sex is dwindling.

Perhaps sex is becoming obsolete for a swath of the populace. No wonder Ben Franklin said you can count on death and taxes, and not sex and satisfaction....
