Mustang mania

OK I am shopping for a new Mustang! I am somewhat torn. I have enjoyed my 2011 Mustang Premium GT with six speed automatic, with a mere 410 HP at the engine. I modified it to improve the suspension, brakes, ride height, wheels and tires and get brighter lights. Did not touch the drive train. Now it has almost 80,000 miles and threatens to be unreliable.

So I have considered options. The new Corvette is attractive, but only two seats. Not practical. The small back seats in the Mustang have carried passengers in a pinch.

The Camaro ZLI is hot, but the bad visibility kills it for me. So I am torn between the 2018 Mustang GT and the 2017 Shelby GT 350. I would prefer the ten speed automatic, but that is only available in the Mustang GT. The hot performance pack 2 is only with manual and costs almost as much as the Shelby. The Shelby is unchanged except for colors for 2018, while the Mustang GT has many hot upgrades for 2018.

A manual GT premium with the best performance upgrades is about $52,000, and 2017 Shelby is essentially the same price. I think I will go for the Shelby which has the extra radiators so you can track use it intensely. Looks like I go from shiftless to shifty. The Shelby has 525 HP flat plane engine naturally aspirated and the Mustang GT has 460 HP. Now I would also like to get four of the Shelby 350 R carbon fiber wheels, but they cost about $15,000 new. I will just wait for someone to crash and total a 350 R, to part out the wheels. Should not take too long...

well, it really boils down to two choices, manual or not? If you really want an automatic (I am not judging, but I am) then 350 is out, get a 2018 Stang, it is a big improvement over the 2015+. Your other choice is the flat plane crank in the GT350, and what a sound that makes, it is, to me, the very definition of a Mustang. Let us know what you get...

the automatic is much more sensible as a daily driver on the LA freeways, but I am a performance junkie. I am being seduced by the dark side of the Shelby force.
