Fuck Trump I saw Alan Cumming the gay Scottish actor who sings last night at Disney Hall. Very funny and engaging. He said he is afraid as a queer recent arrival. I understand that fear. No student of history cannot have some fears of the future of America. America barred Chinese from becoming US citizens from 1883 to 1943. Sixty years! Only WWII changed the policy, when Congress noticed our ally was barred, but the Japanese that attacked us could become citizens! The US was late in banning slavery, which took a Civil War to change our policy. Jim Crow laws then suppressed and defrauded African Americans in many parts of the US until the late sixties. The legacy of voter suppression lives on in Republican controlled states. Women had to fight for voting rights, reproductive control over their own bodies, and equal pay and freedom from sexual harassment and grape. The battle continues. Religious minorities face bigotry and harassment still in many places. Sexual people of many divergent minorities also face discrimination and harassment. The win of marriage equality does not end the struggle. Job discrimination is still legal in many places. Refusals to provide services in the name of religious liberty is the newest cover for bigotry. Alan Cumming is rich and charming. He will not lose his rights. But even the poor and ugly have the right to human dignity. That fight continues. Fuck Trump. American will not turn into Nazi Germany if we don't let it happen. We still have a free press, independent courts, and lots of lawyers to sue the bastards. We have public opinion. We have protests. We have power to resist. We have states like California and New York that are rich and liberal. They can fight and will fight. Fuck Trump. |
