Non-apologies

Funny what passes for an apology these days.

I find humorous those apologies that are focused on the offense felt by the victim but do not express any real regret on the part of the offender. I am sorry you feel that way.

Or worse, sorry I was caught expressing my real feelings and intentions... I should have been more reserved...

Or the famous "inelegantly stated" apology. Mitt Romney expressed one of these quasi-apologies over his 47% are moochers line... He just said it inartfully. Actually he was fairly clear and elegant I thought. Just impolitic.

Seems we have lost the art of feeling actual shame and remorse for doing bad things...

Apparently we lost that Christian virtue.

and then there's the "sorry but".

You know... "sorry but it's really all your fault"

christians aren't the only religion that have that shame-and-remorse virtue btw... amazingly enough even atheists do too!

Christians make the repent part a big deal.... Not sure other religions make it that central to the experience...

I especially laugh at the "apology": I am sorry you feel that way about it....
