Spare change?

I have trouble with the concept of giving money to beggars. I don't think taking care of their situation is my problem. No one gives me spare change, and I would never ask for such money.

I think people should earn their own money by working, or being lucky enough to have parents who will support them or give them money through inheiritance...

I just don't think there is any "spare change". All my money is good and useful, and there is none that is spare...

I sometimes give a to a street musician for the entertainment, and to support the arts. But I am getting something in return that has some value. I do not think a one-sided situation where I support a beggar is a good thing to foster. I feel the begging is demeaning to the beggar and the person who is asked to support this activity.

Plus I am suspicious that some beggars are making good money that way and some are supporting substance abuse problems. I do not wish to assist such bad behavior which hurts the abuser.

So I feel justified in being a little heartless when it comes to non productive begging. Better tough love than enabling bad acts.

I have never been asked for "spare change". A woman did come up to me in the parking lot of a store. she gave me a sob story about needing money for food, etc. The smallest I had at the time was a ten, so I gave it to her. Later, after going into the store, I saw her in there, probably spending my ten. It wasn't a grocery store, either! That has made me leery of giving anyone money.

I believe the Salvation Army and Goodwill do a better job of rehab than just giving money to beggars...
