Putting a value on life

People often say things that are clearly untrue. Generally without considering how stupid they sound. People will say "life is priceless". Clearly untrue. People sell themselves fairly cheaply. Take smoking cigarettes for example. The packages scream this product will kill you, by cancer or heart attacks. Plus tobacco yellows your teeth, ages your skin and causes men to have erectile dysfunction. Yet people pay $5 a pack to harm their health!

When people are hurt and sue in court or put claims in Worker's Comp cases the justice system values their life. Men are generally worth more than women and whites more than minorities. Not fair, but true. Environmental regs and reports value human life and the damage is weighed against the cost of lessening the pollution. Not a pretty thought, but that is the reality of regulation.

In many countries life is sold very cheaply. Look at the human traffic in and human slavery that still occurs. Not pretty, but real.

So those who tell me life is priceless are not paying close attention to the not very kind reality out in this world...
