Pet Names or Terms of Endearment

There are certain 'pet names' that I just don't like:
'honey'
'darling '
'sweetie'
'love'
'doll'

I dislike them even more when some random person, includes them in an introductory email 'to' me, or in a comment on one of my blogs or on one of my pics. Seriously? You don’t know me and you are tossing them around so freely. No doubt, probably using them with everyone they contact. Do you really think it's going to make me feel 'special'?

Usually, ‘pet names’ are used as something special between people in a romantic relationship to create an ‘us’ feeling. I kind of cringe when I see others using them in their communications. Unless there is some kind of offline link between them, they are just co-existing on this make-believe island.

However, I will admit, there is one 'pet name' that 'gets to me' anytime it's used, especially when it is unexpected. I have no idea when or how it started but being called Sunshine just about makes me melt and leaves a huge smile on my face. It always makes me think of this great song:

Ain't No Sunshine
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
It's not warm when she's away
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And she's always gone too long
Anytime she goes away

Wonder this time where she's gone
Wonder if she's gone to stay
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
Anytime she goes away

And I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know
Hey, I oughta leave young thing alone
But ain't no sunshine when she's gone

Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
Only darkness every day
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away

Songwriters: Bill Withers

I don't want nor expect to be suddenly flooded with messages calling me 'Sunshine'. Those that matter, understand the impact it has on me and when 'to' use it.

I am so sorry my friend I had no idea you didn't like terms of endearment words. I call everyone hun, or darlin. So I am sorry if it offended you in any way. And I am with you about being called something like that when you don't know the person.

I love this song, my hubby sings it at Karaoke, and he's a great singer, always makes me smile too. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day..

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

So my question to you is: other than your name, what do you like to be called or enjoy calling someone else?

I don't have any pet names, but I remember being on the extension and listening to an insurance lady patronizing my ex and calling her "hun" when I cut her off and chewed her out and called HER "hun" at every opportunity.

I'm not a fan of the random pet names or terms of endearment, either.
One of the people I work with recently called me "sunshine". I laughed and told her "Yup. That's me. Miss Sunshine....with a side of lightning bolt to zap someone's ass". She was laughing and nodding.

Hmmmm....I know I left that wand around here somewhere!

Tmptrzz, I wasn't referring to anything you have used. No offense was taken, so please don't change what you use. And I agree, Ain't No Sunshine is a great song for karaoke

As long as a pet name someone gives me is sincere I good with it.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I hate being called "baby", it's so generic. But, if someone were to call me "my love" and actually mean it.....

Absolutely right on the subject of terms of endearment having been overused and burned in the process, my lady
This definitely leaves some special terms, only a significant other can , and often uses in mutual affection

Maybe it's the palpable lack of it, that deteterriorates them more...

Cheers ...
( how about "pumpkin" ? )

That song is I believe the most covered song of all time. I think you are right terms of endearment are for use in a special relationship.

What's bad about the pet names that you mentioned is that they get used automatically without really thinking about whether they are appropriate. If someone is going to call you a pet name, then they should put some thought into it so it will be meaningful. And besides, those pet names have some bad baggage attached to them.

Please don't let me be misunderstood.

Some people know about the impact it has on me. The best is when it's said the first time and they used it without knowing

Oh I understand how you feel about 'baby'. I feel the same way about 'babe'. I agree, so much depends on the sincerity in which it is delivered. Thanks for dropping by and sharing your viewpoint.
