send up the Flare! .. yeah, let's Not

i’ve decided to write this today bc it’s something that i get asked abt – on here and in person actually.
it’s Not something i like talking about but it is a fair question i suppose.
a “flare” in MS vernacular is a flare-up of one or more symptoms.
no two people have exactly the same symptoms of MS.
and the Worst thing abt MS for me personally is that a flare is Completely Unpredictable.
you don’t know when it will happen or for how long.
it can be a few minutes, a few hours or a couple of days.
this isn’t a “woe-is-me” post. it is what it is and i Deal.
this is meant to answer questions, if ya got ‘em.

if you have more Questions, feel free to ask. Go!

Vision problems:
problems with eyes tend to be one of the first symptoms. they usually affect only one eye and go away on their own. sight may be blurry, gray, or have a dark spot in the center. a person may suddenly have eye pain and temporary vision loss. “wet” or “glassy” eyes are a common and together with loss of balance issues, can make an MS’er appear to be drunk or high.

i personally get the vision thing alot. my left eye but just as often both. the glassy or wet eye thing: it was suggested to me that i should get a medical alert bracelet for this feature of MS alone. i think it's just smart bc i know of ppl with MS that have been arrested and detained on suspicion of DUI. a bracelet still may Not stop this but it should help. that said, bc i'm stubborn, i Still ~Don't have one.

Speech problems:
sometimes MS can cause people to pause a long time in between words or to have slurred speech. some people also develop swallowing problems.

the pause is bc you're looking for your words. it's like it's on the tip of your tongue but you just can't ~quite remember the precise word you wanted. particularly Frustrating for me aka a litigation paralegal (bc words are my job).

Thinking problems:
for most, this means slowed thinking, poor attention, fuzzy memory or short term memory loss. MS usually does not change your intellect and ability to read and understand conversation.

Abnormal sensations:
people with MS may have numbness, tingling or paralysis. troubling gripping things or Not noticing that you’ve lost your grip (like dropping keys or a pen) can also happen.

~Don't send hate or crazy mail to me for this one but this one can (sometimes) be fun in terms of sex. here's what i mean: when your tactile sense (sense of touch) is that off balance, for me if means i feel all ~sorts* of "new"/"different" stuff. so if you grab my hand, i might feel it on the top of my hand but not the underside. /that/ means i can have sex with the same person and it can feel totally different from one time to the next. every time. how Cool is that!!

Difficulty walking:
MS can cause muscle weakness or spasms, which make it harder to walk. clumsiness, lack of coordination or loss of balance also make it more difficult to walk.

i walk with a cane bc of this. i don't always need it but i do almost always have it, just in case.

Dizziness:
it's common to feel dizzy or lightheaded.

Fatigue:
it often comes on unexpectedly or quickly and causes weak muscles, slowed thinking, or sleepiness.

Muscle spasms:
this usually affect the leg muscles. one might feel mild stiffness or strong, painful muscle spasms.

headaches, sharp pain in your neck area or your spine are other things that can happen.

charmer:
yeah, i actually had a dr ask in weird way if i planned on having kids. i say in a "weird way" bc it's almost like he was suggesting it (hoping for a similar outcome i'd gather as you just mentioned).

Thanks for sharing that - it's nice to see that you're so open and comfortable talking about it.

One thing though, even though you said you're stubborn about it, have you at least considered getting a bracelet? I mean, it's just one of those things that could only be helpful all around...and fashionable too!

And also, not to drag it all down in the dirt and make me look like I have a one track mind, but the sex part does sound nice! But more importantly - do you get many different opportunities with someone? or if not (and what a shame that is, I might add) does that also include your "alone time"?

ah, jZ, my pervy luv .. lol:
let's see .. i dunno if "comfortable" is the right word but thanks .. .. it is something i'm working on at least .. dopey drs keep reminding me abt some "for life" BS .. i don't believe them of course .. .. so i'm making a conscious effort Not to feel soo well .. self conscious .. abt it ..

the bracelet:
yeah, this goes back to the self conscious thingie i just mentioned a second ago .. to answer your question .. yup, i have what seems to be a regular ritual now of going to one site in particular online, ordering the bracelet, customizing it (ie you gotta tell 'em what you have that you need it for) and i put it in the online basket to pay for .. and then i just leave it there .. it's like somehow if i pay for it, /now/ i actually have MS .. go figure, huh??

sex stuff:
i was dx'd in NJ .. i still had one occasional FWB there by the time time i was dx'd .. we played a cpl of times and it was cool, as i described .. i did have to sorta prep him and explain bc well if you haven't seen MS and sex dance together, i think it can make you understandably nervous .. i haven't played in a Long time other than that .. and yes, it is a shame ..

alone time:
i think it does affect this as well .. i think i notice it less bc well i'm used to me .. i always explain it like this as regards to MS and sex: i'm sick, i'm Not dead ..
most ppl are Not amused .. but i'm Not kidding .. if i waited to "feel better" or waited "just in case" on account of a potential flare .. i'd Never do Anything .. like not even "normal" stuff .. so .. i just go abt my business and when it happens, i just settle in and wait for it to go away ..

the only other thing i Do notice (in terms of sex) is that it takes me longer to finish .. i think this is (or Can be) and Up side ..
