A Horrowing Tale!

I was parked at a hot joint with one of my guys, sitting one car next to the other, driver's door to drover's door. It happens to be adjacent to the trouble spot that we have on Saturday nights in our area of patrol. We were waiting for the first fight of the night to break out as the patrons were exiting the place, as it is a weekly tradition for these gang infested patrons. When all of a sudden we hear the distinct sound of gunfire. I turn to look behind me, the direction it was coming from, and whizzz right past our heads a bullet flies. I put my car into drive to make some room in between our cars, so that we could get out, and take better cover, as another shot ricocheted past. I heard my partner, calling in shots fired on the radio, which is a relief, because now I know that he didn't get shot, and I didn't crush him with my car door as I pulled away from his car.

The bad guy fled on foot, and we never even saw him. He was gone before we could figure out what had happened. Which was that he had shot one guy in the middle of the street, through his wrist and thigh, and also through his penis, all shots were entrance and exit shots. (He recovered just fine I have been told) The victims partner, was running away from the gunman, right towards me and my partner and that's why the shots came our way. The shots missed us by mere feet, and one lodged in the double paned window of the hot stand, the other went through their window and into the back wall of the business. Crazy!!!

We were both lucky!! We didn't have the time to think about it as it was gong on, but in the aftermath, we realized how close we came to being shot. It was an eye opener to say the least. He was freaked out alot more than I was. maybe it is because I have more experience on the job by about 8 years, or because I have the right mindset for traumatic events. I am not sure, I just hope that he is able to process it and work his way through it without breaking down. I am sure he will be fine. I have asked him, and he told me that he was fine, That's all I can go on.

I thought that my phone would ring off the hook with people asking me how I was, after they found out about it. I was almost right. The people who knew about it first were the big bosses. I still haven't heard a word from any of them. Not a status check, nothing. It saddens, and angers me, for at least these two reasons. 1.) That after numerous requests for help closing that bar, which went on deaf ears. There was no help for us even the week after a shooting.
2.) That even though we were fine, two of their officers got shot at, and they didn't seem to care, or if they say they do, they have a funny way of showing it.

The experience for me says alot about my Mantra for life. I have posted it on many peoples blogs in their comments sections. If I didn't think it before, which I always have, I sure would now.

Life every day like it's your last!!

Or another with the same message.

I'm not here for a long time, I'm here for a good time!!!

Amy you are so sweet!! I love Baraboo, you know that!!!

I am doing very well with this, not a care in the world. Except for the fact that my department doesn't give a shit, but I knew that already.....lol
