The day music died.
The day music died. Aboard the ill-fated flight were Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, all of whom had performed a few hours earlier at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. Piloting the chartered Beechcraft Bonanza was 21-year-old Roger Peterson, a relatively inexperienced pilot who had not yet qualified for his instrument rating. The performers were headed to Moorhead, Minnesota, the next stop on their "Winter Dance Party" tour. Holly and his backup band headlined the tour, but Valens and Richardson had signed on to help promote sales of their current records. Only a few months prior to beginning the tour, Holly had terminated his relationship with the Crickets, with whom he had recorded several big hits, including "Peggy Sue," "That'll Be the Day," "Oh Boy," "Rave On," and "Everyday." |
