I got the blues bad and that ain't good!
I got the blues bad and that ain't good! So I competed in Guitar Center's King of the Blues competition this week and regrettably, I didn't do as well as I hoped. I'm not sure how it happened, but as I set my pedalboard up to plug in, I lay my guitar down on stage to fix all the cables. When I put my guitar back on to play, I cued the music for the backing track to start (thinking my guitar was still tuned) and within the first two bars I realized that my axe was out of tune below the fifth fret, which was where I had to begin my solo. Needless to say, it threw me off, so I moved everything up an octave and finished the solo. Then my hand started cramping up, so I couldn't execute the runs I had planned and had to improvise the ending, which had been the best part of the solo. I was pretty pissed, though a few of the audience members told me I sounded good and a nice older lady sitting next to me patted my knee and said I was the best she'd heard so far. Apparently the judges didn't think so, however, since I didn't make the final cut. So, ironically, playing the blues has given me the "blues!" Next year, I smoke 'em all. |

being able to improvise and make it sound like it wasn't all messed up is a great talent, and you find new things that way.... like nice older ladies who put their hand on your knee... and other things here's to next year!
