BLOGLAND IS IN DECLINE, OR IS IT?

Declinism is the belief that things are tending towards decline. The term declinism was coined by the German historian, Oswald Spengler, in his book published in 1918, The Decline of the West.

I see declinism in blogland - bloggers observing that blogland is not what it used to be.

Also I see declinism in older people - things aren’t like they used to be. I see declinism in Britain - Britain is better off leaving a declining Europe. I see declinism in America - Trump got elected allegedly to make America great again. I see declinism in the West - the West is a debauched and spent force. I see declinism in humanity - the so-called natural world is being fucked over by humans which will fuck us over. I see declinism in this planet - scientists often see Earth as a fragile planet waiting to be swallowed up in a black hole.

In a survey conducted two years ago, 70 per cent of British adults think "things are worse than they used to be" and 55 per cent believed their own lives have deteriorated despite the fact that British people are richer, healthier and live longer than ever before.

On one level, declinism is inevitable - we produce, we consume; things start, things end; we live, we die!

But some psychologists have tried to explain these bouts of declinism as a memory problem. Psychologists have found that we tend to view our past positively and our future negatively.

For psychologists, declinism is "a trick of the mind" and "an emotional strategy, something comforting to snuggle up to when the present day seems intolerably bleak." Psychologists talk about the "reminiscence bump", meaning that older people most remember the best events when they were younger. Psychologists are saying that older people filter out the bad events when younger and the good events when older.

Is your life worse now than it was?
Do you think things are worse that they used to be?
Do you think blogland has declined since you joined?

I look back fondly on my past not least because I survived. The future is always fearful because I may not survive it!

The first painting above is Thomas Cole’s 1836 painting The Course of Empire - The Destruction. I don’t know the artist of the painting below and I’d be grateful if someone can tell me who painted it, but it seems to portray debauchery at the end of the Roman Empire.

PS. I've now been expertly told by joisygirl that the painting below is Thomas Couture's The Romans of the Decadence, painted in 1847.

I wouldn't say worse, but things are always changing.....I do find time seems to be going by faster than before although 24 hours is the same period as it was years ago. I find this site is declining, just as my own posts have declined.
It is sad that some bloggers are no longer here as they became angels!

sorry, I never studied art history so I can't tell you the artist. although I love the way the nudity is realized. note the tension in the breasts of the top left woman as she pulls her arms up.

yes to your larger question. when I first blogged here, we held discussion groups weekly with 12 or so people using a voice thingy. some ahd cams on, not me, I didn't have a cam then. but we shared a lot more than just on line. this was a bdsm group but still.... it could be any group, couldn't it?

ah well

You cannot conceive the many without the one.

I don't think my life is worse now than it was when I was younger....it is very different and not what I expected but I am content.

I am not sure whether things in general are worse now or not....perhaps I have a deeper understanding of history now and that gives me cause for worrying more than I did when I was young.

Blogland is definitely not what it used to be....at least not for me. There is a lot I don't like about what it has become but people have the right to post what they want....just as I have the right to ignore the posts I don't want to read.

There are fewer new posts each day but that may be because new bloggers don't know about the "magic comment".

The lower painting is The Romans of the Decadence by Thomas Couture, 1847. Did an image search on Google and it came right up.

Blogland is in decline. Most of the top posts are smut pics. Few of the top bloggers are posting anything of substance. Few ideas are being expressed, just more porn for the masses.

However, blogland tends to come and go. There's an ebb and flow to it. So all is not lost. It isn't always a bad idea to get in while it is bad and establish yourself when it is easy, rather than coming in at its peak and being drowned out.

Is your life worse now than it was? No, in some ways better in some ways not so much.

Do you think things are worse that they used to be? "Things" like world the world in general . . . Again, in some ways better in some ways not so much. Rump is working to accelerate things (environment, education, working conditions, racial situations, warfare, health care etc.) becoming bad as they had been in the past. But I suspect his blunders will be so significant that once he is done the pendulum will swing the other way.

Do you think blogland has declined since you joined? This is the beginning of my 3rd year of blogging and I have to say, Yes. A number of bloggers who I enjoyed reading and interacting with have left. Some because of PC BS and the desire for others to control what is said. The loss of diversity and freedom to speak out their thoughts, even if they are different makes having honest discussions difficult at best. Some of what is left is

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Blogland in decline? I am afraid I will agree. Hope it is just a cycle, but in all honesty, does not look like it.

"The Romans In The Decadence Of The Empire" By Thomas Couture, 1847
He lived Dec.21, 1815 - Mar 30, 1879

And I have been saying this very thing over and over again for a while now.
When Elvis came on the Ed Sullivan Show, I remember people saying our social mores went out the window, and yet so many people now say that we had high social mores in the 70's. How convenient, eh? I was told by someone else that blogland is going to shit, and I argued that everything goes in cycles and there is an ebb and flow to everything. Is there less traffic this year compared to last? Probably. Is that true for all the years that they have gathered data on blogland? Well, the site will never tell, will they?

And thank you for giving me confirmation bias (and my tongue is only slightly in my cheek on that last comment),
kk

I may not do right, but I do write,
I have bliss, joy, and happiness in my life,

Is your life worse now than it was?
Yes. It's also better, at the same time. I don't need to explain in detail. I have more leisure time but I'm also not twenty five anymore. And so it goes. Some things are better, some not as good.

Do you think things are worse that they used to be?
You get the same answer here.

Do you think blogland has declined since you joined?
If I were to listen to other bloggers, yes. I've been reading about the decline of the blogs since my first day here. Yawn. Speaking subjectively, and believe me there is no other way, I don't think the blogs are in such bad shape.

My life has its ups and downs. Blogland has ups and downs. Human civilizations are born, develop and die. But psychologists show that we are more likely to be happy if we smile, if we laugh and if we want to be happy. And joy carries within it powerful weapons to fight against stupidity. My English is too bad for me to play puns, it's a pity because puns are "flatulencies of the mind", the swarms of embers of joy. Let's be joyful!
And your coms, Spunky, are so good for beeing joyful

I think blogland simply reflects what's going on in the greater society.

And things won't change until people learn, once again, to be civil and respectful to one another.

Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have.

As far as blogland goes, it is always changing. There is a seasonal ebb and flow. .. I am not so sensitive to it usually.

Times are changing rapidly. In many ways there are new threats and fears and that can make it seem like things are worse than ever. .. But advancements continue at a breakneck pace and things are really getting better and better every day.

I'm not really a believer in declination. .. I do believe in entropy.

Our U.S. President is a clown, blogland is ok, people need to wake up and take better care of Mother Earth, and I'm doing well, as long as I don't have to hear or watch the "clown" speak.

    Quoting joisygirl:
The Romans of the Decadence (detail), by Thomas Couture, 1847. Musée d'Orsay.

    Thomas Couture
    1815–1879

(b Senlis, 21 Dec. 1815; d Villiers-le-Bel, 30 Mar. 1879). French historical and portrait painter, a pupil of Gros and Delaroche. He is chiefly remembered for his vast ‘orgy’ picture The Romans of the Decadence

    You are welcome.

Do you think things are worse that they used to be? I do not think they are worse, just more confused

Do you think blogland has declined since you joined? Like society it is always in some sort of flux. Dips and peaks

Of COURSE my joisygirl would know!

Like others, the ups and downs prevent me from saying if things are better or worse... it depends. My self-image and esteem are better. My financial situation is better. Other things, much worse. I try to take the "alltogether" view on life when it comes to that kind of stuff, otherwise I get bogged down in my own minutiae.

Blogland? It's definitely on the way back up. When I joined a few years ago, it was vibrant and welcoming. I met many fellow bloggers on my travels, as well as found a great friend and lover. As disillusionment with the (manipulation of) rankings grew, so did the number of angry blogs and disrespectful behavior. The past year a number of bloggers I enjoyed reading have stopped writing. Fortunately, in the past few months I've found others who've started writing what they feel, not just what they think will get comments. Overall I think we're back on an incline!

Gm Spunky a very good set of questions.

Is your life worse now than it was? Not for me just a bit busy with work
Do you think things are worse that they used to be? for me better
Do you think blogland has declined since you joined? Blogland has it up and down. I think chatrooms are declining on here. This is where they use to hang out and have fun online now they moved over to blogland. Some of the good ones are long gone that we use to blog with but new ones are coming up each and everyday. I love to see the way it was before with no glitches or not as many of them. Over the past few years there is far too much BS drama going on with bloggers that has sent a few bloggers away and they have never came back again which is sad. I truly love to blog with a few of the old group. So the answer is yes just like society it has it ups and down hugsssssssss V

Compared to many of the bloggers I am a neophyte. I got really interested after I read several of HumorLife postings. I decided to try it myself and my very first post was rejected LOL ( seems I violated a TOU cause it had guns, and children in it- I still have it and may re-issue)
After I found the symposium I decided to stay. I love learning new things and love sharing knowledge so you can see this in the things I choose to research and post.
I was very disturbed when blogland became a punching bag toward some bloggers and some topics. I make no comments on what i do not care for most of the time. I have blogs I read every day and then take the time to read all the newbies.
I am especially attentive to those who have newly joined VSG and always write them a personal note and tell them how Symposium works and encourage them to contribute. This is my way of keeping new blood here;Help them find their way around- nobody led me and I think encouraging new ideas is paramount to making blogland healthy and fun

As for my personal life: It is no better it is no worse. I am a cancer survivor as many of us are so days and events are always special. I am a glass almost full person and usually see the good in most things even when I do not agree

Life events and life outside in the nation and the world is always changing
and I take in what I need or want and ignore some of it.
One makes their own joy and happiness
