AMERICA FIRST, REALLY?!

I wasn’t going to blog about yesterday’s inauguration of Donald Trump because I’m not an American. But I’m so depressed about the Trump Presidency, as well as Brexit, that I can’t control my urge to blog about Trump.

Though not an American, America affects the rest of the world, so I hope my American friends, especially any Trumpites and Trumpettes, will forgive me for this post.

A few days ago I was discussing the Trump Presidency with my best friend; we had to stop the conversation when we realised Trump will now have nuclear weapons at his disposal. But before this scary thought, we thought of all the ways for the Trump Presidency may not be as bad as we feared.

Our best hope of limiting the damage of a Trump Presidency is that there will be resistance to what he wants to do - resistance from Congress, resistance from the Supreme Court, resistance from state governments, resistance from American companies, resistance from international bodies, resistance from other countries’ governments and, most important, resistance from American people.

We also slightly reassured ourselves that politicians despite what they initially promise often get blown off course by events and crises. Perhaps the North Koreans can fire a nuclear missile to distract Trump; Trump would also then need China to restrain North Korea!

After a few beers we got a little militant and entertained the thought of someone taking Trump out - sorry, what we meant was for someone to take him in hand and give him a good spanking or perhaps even a few Russian to give him a cold but golden shower!

In desperation we even thought that it may be all a joke and that Trump doesn’t mean anything he says. Perhaps he just said nasty things to get elected. We soon dismissed that thought when we found out that, though declining the presidential salary, Trump has already billed the US Secret Service over $1.5 million for their staff to travel on his plane while protecting him!

Since this conversation with my friend, our fears have only been confirmed. His first decision was to reduce the scope of the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, just as Barack Obama was flying out to Palm Springs. As well as being a gratuitous act to undermine Barack Obama’s legacy, it was moreover an attack on poor people in America. This decision clearly sets the tone for the Trump administration.

In Trump’s inauguration speech, he promised to put America first. Fine, this is nothing new. The American state has always put its interests first, just as other states put their interests first.

What I fear will happen is that rather than America first it will be Trump first. I suspect Trump will use his public office as his private office.

I can't find any solace in the election of Trump as US President. I don’t believe that the many who voted for him will benefit from his policies. Just like the people who voted for Brexit won’t benefit from Brexit, ordinary people are just being conned. Political commentators call this post-truth politics; I call it lies and more lies for the rich to get richer and the poor poorer by peddling fear and hatred.

This post isn’t in any way an attack on people who voted for Trump, it’s an attack on Trump! I’d love to be proved wrong with this attack because I think America is already a great country.

Trump is going to make America less great for everyone except a select few.

That one silver lining, if we must look for one, is that he is inspiring resistance. The people want their country back, and although he promised that, he won't deliver.

His party is going to give him free reign for a while. They want a few things, and he may be a pushover and give them. .. But that won't last. .. He doesn't care about the party either.

He already took down everything about climate change from the White House's web site! ... Buckle up. It is about to get real.

I share your fears and I fear that Marine Lepen will be the next French president for the same reasons. A number of people suffer from their situation in our democracies and vote to express their anger. They think that democracy is strong enough for their cry to be heard and things to improve for them. I am afraid that institutions and counter-powers are not effective against cynicism and the specter of the 1930s is on the horizon.
Hop i'm wrong !

I hate to say this but you just don't get it. Trump was elected because people are sick of the status quo of Washington and the slide of the middle class. The haves are taking over and could care less about the working man and the accumulation of power and greed. When 5% are prospering on the backs of the other 95% there is a problem.

That's very optimistic and true for some Trump supporters.

Unfortunately, we all know that's not the only reason people voted for Trump. If Republicans wanted an anti-establishment candidate, why not Governor John Kasich? Cruz? Christie?

Sorry but many people voted for Trump because they loved his rhetoric. And that's why he was the nominee. Sick of the status quo is the spin many want to use to rationalize this choice but I don't believe it's accurate.

Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have.

You can polish a turd til the cows come home. It's still gonna be a turd. With the inauguration of Trump America shit itself in public. We're going to be years- decades even- trying to clean to clean up the mess. The Trump supporters haven't got the wit to understand what they have wrought with this racist temper tantrum.

You social justice warriors in the UK need to take a hard look at what your liberal policies have done to your own country. It's rapidly turning into a shit hole, and your "national healthcare" isn't so great either. I'm sad to see it happen to a once great country.

No. The reason he was elected is because just over 50% of the voters voted in the election. So each candidate got 25% or more of the vote (Clinton got more votes). Which means that only one fourth of the voters decided America's path for the next 4 years. Trump represents the haves that you claim are taking over. He even nominated the Foreclosure King to run an department.

Thanks for the summary. I avoided watching the charade of this bully and his family.

As a transwoman myself hon, I am embarrassed that you would put your support behind someone who works for people that would deny us our rights. I really question your sincerity and true devotion to the LGBT community.

One last comment I swear. Trump won because his opponent was just as bad and the media decided to hold off releasing those videos, tapes, and testimony during the primaries because they wanted Hillary to win. They thought that Trump was the best candidate for her to go against so they waited until after the conventions. Ok, I am done.

Spunky,
For those that feel your opinion is not valid because you are not a Untied States citizen; all opinions expressed by a blogger is valid. If you quoted sources that were obvious lies, they could argue the facts with you but not your opinion.

The site for the governmental dept for Native Americans has been taken offline. The Dept. For the support of families of the military, also taken down. While they may come up when those employees are voted on by congress are put in place, this did not happen from the Bush Administration to Obama's. They were switched over when the proper people were in charge, not taken down indefinitely.

The National Park service made the mistake of tweeting a photo from Obama's inauguration from January 2013 beside a photo from yesterday. The obvious comparison that less than 180,000 does not look like 310,000. Now the Nationals park Service has been told that their twitter account is indefinitely taken offline by Trump's word. Um, the Twitter president, who tweets obvious lies all the time doesn't want other competing Twitter accounts, even if it is simply the truth.

It is obvious to those of us who did not vote t-Rump that the next four years will be a challenging time for us. TrumpleThinSkin will have a hard time just riding roughshod over the opposition party, but try he will.

CheetoHeads unite!
The women's march will only show the whole country that many of us will resist to the end. My apologies at the length of my comment. Obviously I am not a CheetoHead.
Kk

The observant make the best lovers,
I may not do right, but I do write,
I have bliss, joy, and happiness in my life,

I agree with you, with his lack of a filter, let alone any diplomacy, I also fear a war. And a close friend of mine, who is knowledgeable about events, said that he has put businesses out of business by not paying according to agreed contract terms and then siccing his lawyers on them. With deep pockets, a small- or medium-size business has no chance.

I'm wondering why he thought and sold the idea that "America" wasn't great.

So far it has reigned on several of the promises it made while campaigning.

Now the world has at least 4 nuclear countries with highly questionable people in charge: N Korea, Iran, Pakistan and "America".

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

He just is such a bigoted asshole.. He only says what he thinks the people want him to say.
He's a two bit con man, he can t keep talking about his election win.
He's afraid. He knows he has no command over the America people. He only controls the people that he can make afraid.
And this isolationism is not good for America or the world.

He lost the popular vote. It was the electoral vote that elected him. The world needs to be watchful for the next few months. If he continues to po his party, they will find a way to impeach and go from there.

I agree with you spunky...and I'm Canadian. His position is now going to affect every country in the world, and I am afraid it won't be good. He now has to prove my opinion wrong.
The only reason he won the election was because 1/2 of all eligible voters "DIDN'T" bother to vote....She had more votes but the election goes by the electoral vote

I am horrified that he actually is now President and somewhat disturbed that some commenting here fail to realise that the Presidency of the USA does not just affect America....his actions will affect the rest of the World. I hope America....and the rest of us survive this.

as a woman and someone who did NOT vote for Trump, I think the entire World should be concerned about his presidency. He is an erratic, petty, misogynistic homophobic bigot. with codes to a nuclear arsenal.

i'm terrified. I will be doing everything I can and working very hard to remove him from office. the women's march has clearly shown that there is a massive elvel of resistance to his presidency. the popular vote did so as well. He refusal to stop doing business in foregin countries, etc, etc..........

we, the people, are resisting. I can only hope that the judicial branch of the government will support our efforts.

You cannot conceive the many without the one.
