The only wiener shot I have posted anywhere...

...and I like to sit and stroke him. ^_^

His name is Munchkin. He's my pal, a lazy lap one minute and a guardian of all wildlife in the back yard the next. Seriously. He located and defended newborn kittens from our lawn guys this spring and came to get me Lassy style about some baby mockingbirds that had been knocked out of a nest in a rain storm last summer. He's got exactly 1 kill on record...a lizard that would still be alive if Holly had allowed him to put it back down rather than trying to take it from him.

He's looking a little cranky in this picture because I didn't schedule a photo op far enough in advance. Holly says he's spoiled, but I always correct her. In order for something to spoil, it has to have been good to begin with. ^_^

Munchkin is currently in exile at my sisters for a bit. He and the roommates had a falling out. He should be back to curling up in my lap for a nap soon though.

Munchkin is a miniature dachshund...in Germany they call them "zwerg teckel" which means "dwarf slayer". I like to think of him as a dog-weasel. ^_^

Most miniature breeds were created to be lap dogs and companion animals. Dachshunds are one of the only breeds miniaturized for sport purpose...the Germans needed a dog that could get into a smaller hole to kill smaller animals than the full sized dachshund, which is used for badger hunting. It sounds a little unbelievable when you think about the weight difference between a dachshund and a badger, but Munchkin regularly wrestles around with my sister's basset...and Duchess is roughly 5 times his weight.

    Quoting :

Munchkin snapped at Holly. He broke skin, but didn't try to grab with the bite. Just a defensive snap.

Munchkin is not by nature an ill tempered animal...but like any dog, he will not be manhandled by people he considers his inferiors without defending himself. If you are in the pack, you're the bigger dog without argument and with only a slight (and super cute) dachshund grumble. If you are not pack, do not try to enforce your will.

Holly makes a lot of noise about the dog regardless:

"oh, I'm allergic" (BS...she had a dachshund when I met her)

"I feel like you pay way more attention to the dog than to me" (A dog is a responsibility, she's married and we aren't dating anymore)

"Get your dog out of my way!" (How far does someone's head have to be jammed up their ass that they can't walk around or step over an 11 pound dog that wandered over when he saw them because he's friendly and curious?)

"You don't train that dog" (I have trained the dog. Holly hasn't ever spent time with the dog she didn't have to, and I haven't trained the dog to respond to being yelled at or kicked at. And when Munchkin doesn't respond well to her tirades, she always gets someone else to deal with him rather than establishing any kind of superior pack relationship to the dog)

Patrick doesn't seem to have a problem with the dog. He plays with Munchkin quite often, and while some of the stuff he did kinda screwed up my training techniques (poking at him with a socked foot and then playing keep away when he attacks screws up both the "don't bite" and "leave my socks alone" training) at least he and Munchkin get on well. Patrick is sort of the dirty old uncle for Munchkin, I suppose.

Anyway, so I'm at work one evening. Patrick went to bed and left Munchkin out to run around. Holly decided she was off to bed, and I wasn't home to put the dog in his crate for the night. I've showed her how to get him to go in his crate a dozen times...I don't have to pick him up or chase him or anything else. Me, treat, open door to kennel and he'll be sitting inside waiting for his treat before I can blink. In fact, he will often start scratching at the door to his kennel when I go get the treat bag.

I wasn't there. According to Holly, she tried to get him to go in the crate and he wouldn't go so she tried to pick him up and was bitten. I wasn't there. But I know Holly. It didn't work for here right off, so she started yelling at him and chasing him. And then, frustrated, she went to snatch him up with some angry words. And then Munchkin bit her. I wasn't there. But that's what I figure happened. And my sister's take on it. And what David thought had happened. And pretty much everybody else that had ever been in the house with Holly and the dog at the same time had the same take on it. "What did Holly do to Munchkin" is always the first question.

After Munchkin bit her, she ran in to wake up Patrick who (no big surprise) had no problem getting Munchkin to go in his kennel. Then she called me at work to demand that I get the dog out of the house...not like I'm busy making a living, you understand.

Munchkin is having fun at my sister's until the end of the summer...at which point I'll either be moving or Holly will be dropping the crazy routine.
