Happy Hanukkah

Hanukkah starts at sundown tonight and yes, it IS actually about the single most MINOR holiday on the Jewish calendar it's probably one of the few that non-Jews are aware of.

Of course it's yearly proximity to Christmas has helped to 'elevate' it's standing!

As I've said many many times before, Hanukkah falls into that categeory or Jewish holidays that I describe as follows:

They oppressed us and/or tried to kill us.

We fought back and WON.

Let's eat!!

Around the world tonight, Jewish families will be lighting the first candle on the Menorah to commemorate an actual, historical event that took place back in 165 BCE..

"By 165 BCE the Jewish revolt against the Seleucid monarchy was successful. The Temple was liberated and rededicated. The festival of Hanukkah was instituted by Judah Maccabee and his brothers to celebrate this event. After recovering Jerusalem and the Temple, Judah ordered the Temple to be cleansed, a new altar to be built in place of the polluted one and new holy vessels to be made. According to the Talmud, olive oil was needed for the menorah in the Temple, which was required to burn throughout the night every night. But there was only enough oil to burn for one day, yet miraculously, it burned for eight days, the time needed to prepare a fresh supply of oil for the menorah. An eight day festival was declared by the Jewish sages to commemorate this miracle."

There ya have it.

To commemorate the event, we Jews light the candles and of COURSE eat. The traditional food is fried potato pancakes or Latkes. We fry them in oil to once again, remember the miracle..

Yes, Ol Tazzerman WILL be making up plate after plate of Latkes with apple sauce and sour cream on the side tonight. If your hungry, stop on by.. I'll have PLENTY!!!

We will light the first candle tonight and then an additional candle over the course of the next seven nights.

I have a very nice Hanakkah gift all ready to go for my wifey.

About a month ago, I noticed that her favorite pair of gloves were looking a bit ratty so I went out and bought her some VERY nice gloves to replace them with. Inside one of those new gloves is a LOVELY little tennis bracelet that I KNOW she's just gonna 'plotz' over... Plus she'll have Hanakkah cards from both me AND our boy 'Jake'... Woof woof....

Happy Hanukkah to all...

-tm

Bonus question: If there are eight days of Hanukkah and we're supposed to light eight candles to commemorate the miracle then WHY are there NINE candles on a Menorah?

Sweeie you have GOT to get some sleep... 4:15am?? Sheesh..

A latke is a fried potato pancake. Grate up a potato with some onions, mix in an egg and a little Matzoh Meal, season with salt and pepper then fry em up in hot oil until there all crispy and a delicious golden brown. Serve with either sour cream (my fave) or apple sauce, or BOTH (My brothers fave).

You have some of the best eatin around.. Period....

LOL... I never sleep. Either that, or I just sleep all the time. C'mon, I'm unemployed! (quoting Cartman) "I do what I want!!"

OH - and why have I also seen it spelled 'Chaunkkah'?
I've seen Hanukkah spelled at LEAST a hundred different ways from Sunday. None of them are right, none of them are wrong although I prefer Hannukkah because it is closer to the actual hebrew spelling and way of pronouncing it.. -tm

Awesome... hope you have some good Jewish eatin'! Before I finished reading I was asking if there there was a typical meal made for the occasion, i.e., turkey for Thanksgiving, ham for Christmas... oops never mind! But what is a latke?

I love Jews... y'all all seem so sophisticated and aware...

What a sweet gift for your wife! Leather gloves? You know us women go nuts over dem tennis bracelets... how sweet! Gotta let us know how she reacts.

Thanks for the history lesson... that was fun!

Happy Hanukkah!!!! While it is not a "major" holiday, it should always be celebrated in the spirit for which it was created.

And as Cougar said, I'd be more than happy to bit into a Latke with a tennis bracelet in it
We will don't worry... There's actually a LOT that can be learned from the entire 'story' surrounding Hanukkah.. I wish I could give you ALL a nice tennis bracelet my dear. Really I do... Of course, then ol Tazzerman would just HAVE to deliver it in person and then... well lets just say I have a THING for red-heads -tm

"The Temple was liberated and rededicated." you know more than me: did it happen often?

Bonus Q: with the 9th you light the 8 other ones
Thanks a bunch my friend and yes, the Temple in Jerusalem was defiled and sacked a number of times but only in THIS instance did we see the 'micracle' that the holiday was commemerated for.. -tm
