starry starry night...
starry starry night... Starry starry night paint your palette blue and grey look out on a summer's day with eyes that know the darkness in my soul. Vincent... by Don McLean
It was Valentine's day. Freshman year at college. The snow had covered every inch of the ground. But in our dorm the party was raging. She walked into my room half-way through the party. She didn't leave till late in the afternoon of the next day. She captivated me. Tall. Lanky. Long blond hair, clear sparkling eyes and a wicked grin. A free spirit, artistic, wild and rebellious... She fell in my arms and stayed there. Giggled playfully... and threw me on the bed.
The hours flew. Full of ecstasy. Full of youthful lust. Full of laughter. The hours turned into days, the days into weeks. I was smitten. She was so unlike anyone I knew... She had a razor sharp wit. She was caustic with her tongue. And sexy as all hell. I gave her the freedom she needed. Accepted her without asking any questions... without judging her unconventional ways. "You are a bourgeois with a brain", she once told me. Later she revised that. "A bourgeois with a heart" was her correction...
We spent a lot of time together. Almost lived together. And then she disappeared. And then returned. Only to disappear again. She would knock on my door and knew she'd find me smiling... "I missed your cherubic face", she would say teasingly... Then she would walk in. I was her safe haven whenever the demons that chased her got too close. But she'd never stay too long.
One night she lay in my arms... She was leaving the next day. I said nothing, just held her. She didn't want to leave me empty handed... As if on cue, this song came on the radio. She brushed my hair back and looked into my eyes. "This is my gift to you", she whispered, "I want you to think of me whenever you hear this song". She sang to me softly...
Shadows on the hills sketch the trees and the daffodils catch the breeze and the winter chills in colors on the snowy linen land.
She placed her finger on my lips to silence me. Kissed me quickly before continuing...
But I could have told you Vincent this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.
"This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you", she repeated. But as a silent tear stayed in my eye, I realized that this was not her gift to me... This was her song... and that this world was never meant for one as beautiful as her...

and for those of you who may want the full lyrics, here they are:
Vincent written and sung by Don Mclean in 1972, his beautiful tribute to Vincent Van Gogh
Starry starry night paint your palette blue and grey look out on a summer's day with eyes that know the darkness in my soul.
Shadows on the hills sketch the trees and the daffodils catch the breeze and the winter chills in colors on the snowy linen land. And now I understand what you tried to say to me how you suffered for your sanity how you tried to set them free. They would not listen they did not know how perhaps they'll listen now.
Starry starry night flaming flo'rs that brightly blaze swirling clouds in violet haze reflect in Vincent's eyes of China blue.
Colors changing hue morning fields of amber grain weathered faces lined in pain are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand.
And now I understand what you tried to say to me how you suffered for your sanity how you tried to set them free. perhaps they'll listen now.
For they could not love you but still your love was true and when no hope was left in sight on that starry starry night. You took your life as lovers often do; But I could have told you Vincent this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.
Starry starry night portraits hung in empty halls frameless heads on nameless walls with eyes that watch the world and can't forget.
Like the stranger that you've met the ragged men in ragged clothes the silver thorn of bloddy rose lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.
And now I think I know what you tried to say to me how you suffered for your sanity how you tried to set them free. They would not listen they're not list'ning still perhaps they never will.

Wow stormy, I think that's the best bling I've seen!
We probably all have had an experience with loving a free spirit who cannot be tied down - you've captured that well.
And 'Starry Night' is a much better song than 'American Pie', in my opinion.

I love that song, and I have that picture hanging in my living room.

~makes me kinda think of never knowing where you fit in...... just knowing where you're safe. Not any fear of going there, even if it in a painting, words of poetry, lyrics........ being yourself and being accepted, for you ......... ~ lend me an earlobe, van gogh!

A gorgeous post....I can feel the want as you discover her and the anguish as she leaves yet again.
