a comparison...
a comparison... Like so many of us, music has played a major part in my life. Although I play no instruments and 'sing' totally off key, I can't think of my life without music. So, I have built up a sizable collection of vinyl records, cd's and downloaded thousands of songs. I can't work without listening to music. Nor can I drive... And like most of us, I associate so many songs to memories... some happy, some sad...
I recently looked at the Top 40 chart, I was curious to see what songs are popular these days. It's something I used to do religiously as a ... and needless to say I bought most of the LPs or 45s... (yes, these were the days of vinyl).
On this chart was a song from Pink called 'U and Ur hand'. I actually like this song. But listening to its lyrics forced me into a comparison... I remembered a favorite song from my teenagehood. It was written by Neil Young, performed by Nicolette Larson... and called 'Lotta love'. The theme was similar... a certain 'disagreement' between a boy and a girl, as apparently the said boy didn't quite meet the said girl's emotional needs... at least for that particular night. (Incidentally, there is an interesting difference in the use of spelling on the titles, 'lotta' being the cool spelling of the time, 'u' and 'ur' being today's versions).
Well, here are the lyrics for 'Lotta love'.
La La La La La La La La La Ooh, Ooh
It's gonna take a lotta love To change the way things are. It's gonna take a lotta love Or we won't get too far So if you look in my direction And we don't see eye to eye, My heart needs protection and so do I.
It's gonna take a lotta love To get us thru the night. It's gonna take a lotta love To make things work out right. So if you are out there waitin' I hope you show up soon, 'Cause my heart needs relating not solitude
Gotta lotta love Gotta lotta love La La La La La La La La La Ooh, Ooh
And now the lyrics for 'U and Ur hand'.
Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh oh Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh oh Check it out Going out On the late night Looking tight Feeling nice It's a cock fight I can tell I just know That it's going down Tonight At the door we don't wait cause we know them At the bar six shots just beginning That's when dick head put his hands on me But you see
CHORUS I'm not here for your entertainment You don't really want to mess with me tonight Just stop and take a second I was fine before you walked into my life Cause you know it's over Before it began Keep your drink just give me the money It's just you and your hand tonight
Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh oh Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh oh
Midnight I'm drunk I don't give a fuck Wanna dance by myself Guess you're outta luck Don't touch back up I'm not the one Alright Listen up it's just not happening You can say what you want to your boyfriends Just let me have my fun tonight Aiight
CHORUS
Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh oh Break break Break it down
In the corner with your boys you bet up five bucks To get at the girl that just walked in but she thinks you suck We didn't get all dressed up just for you to see So quit spilling your drinks on me yeah
You know who you are High fivin, talkin shit, but you're going home alone aren't cha?
Cause I'm not here for your entertainment No You don't really want to mess with me tonight Just stop and take a second (Just stop and take a second) I was fine before you walked into my life Cause you know it's over (Know it's over) Before it began Keep your drink just give me the money It's just you and your hand tonight (It's just you and your hand)
I'm not here for your entertainment No no no You don't really want to mess with me tonight Just stop and take a second (Just take a second) I was fine before you walked into my life Cause you know it's over Before it began Keep your drink just give me the money It's just you and your hand tonight Yeah oh
Now, I find it interesting how different generations express themselves differently. Is it just different wording or different attitudes?... I wonder what your take on this is... Any further observations? Any comments? Any more examples?... Leave a comment and let me know.
As always, my kisses...

I think it has alot to do with both; more "attitude" than wording though. Alot has changed throughout that era and this current era. Teenagers are growing up more quickly and therefore, certain things (which I dont think is fair nor I agree) are kind of forced into/onto a teenager's life, attitude, expectations as a young adult, etc...these days. Basically, I feel that alot of the teenagers these days are being brought up in a world thats too fast for them. Just my honest opinion. I dont think its fair to them at all.
How are you, toothy?

Everything is different these days, my girls are 3 and 7, and are already concerned with their appearances. I don't think I started caring about my looks until I was 12. It's scary when you think about it, how the superficial has become the top priority...
it's nice seein' you around again baby...xoxox s

Yours_2_Corrupti wonder if tv and the advertising industry are to blame for this... to 'confess my past sins', i started wearing cologne when i was 11, (i always had a 'thing' about smelling nice and clean), but, yes, things are very different nowadays. it's good to see you too, baby... i am looking forward to a post from you, my s. kisses. d.

Quoting spunky11961: That's the problem with modern progress, the world moves faster each day....it's a much faster paced world now than when I was young~

i wonder if it's just that... yes, clearly we're way past our adolescence (though some of my friends will tell you i am mentally still there, lol...), but objectively speaking, isn't the difference a little more dramatic nowadays? always good to see you here sweetie kisses.

stormyonegoodan excellent point, sweetie... still, i wonder if mick jagger wasn't a bigger shock to the elder generations of the early 60s than a singer using profanity today... remember that people were scandalized that he wouldn't wear a clean jacket onstage... or that his band didn't wear uniforms!... or that the lyrics of 'let's spend the night together' had to be changed to 'let's spend some time together' for the ed sullivan show!... lol... kisses

dragonwolf64oh, i very much like pink's song too... i wouldn't mention it if i didn't... but here's my question: would you have expressed yourself this way back then?... furthermore... would you have done so in public?... my post is really just about the contrast of the two. i am by no means taking sides... thank you for your visit, hope you like the 'bright side of the moon' kisses
